What is this? Possible contam
    #26623782 - 04/24/20 02:01 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

About 3 days ago i noticed this blue/Green growth on one of my cakes. First i believed it to be Trich or some other kind of mold. So i isolated the jar. But now i believe it's something else due to the fact that it hasn't grown or spread at all. Infact, it seems like the mycelium is colonizing over it.

Any of you got any idea of what it might be?

Thanks

Looks like trich to me. I would open the jar outside and take a sniff.

99% of the time any discoloration is going to be contamination, especially blackish/grey contamination. Also, even though 3 days has passed thats not necessarily enough time to notice any change in growth of the discoloration; but trust, it IS alive and well

Alrighty then. Guess I'll just throw it away. 1 jar out of 19 ain't bad. considering i don't have a PC

Definitely good odds! PF tek doesnt require PCing so the trich (if thats what it was) could have came from the syringe itself.

Yeah i guess so. My sterile technique def needs work. Shit, my glovebox is as ghetto as you can get it. Just a plastic container with two holes in it. Also i live in an old house so there might be moldspores flying everywhere, trying to keep the room humidity at about 30% tho
Also i got a cat, so that does not help.

What's the best way to save the jar? Those widemouth half pints are a pain to come by where i live.

Just steam sterilize it before throwing the shit out and wash with soap and water or?

I just eject the cake into the trash or a trash bag (outside is safest) then wash the jar out with soap and water, scrub with a sponge. Easy peezy.

A container with two holes in it  is all you’re looking for. You don’t want to attach gloves to it or anything

An update, so i never got around to throwing away the contaminated jar. Today i went to check on it and there is still no signs of What ever contaminant it is spreading at all and it's been 8 days. Shit, it even looks like the contam  has decreased in size. Infact, this is the jar that har colonized the fastest out of all the 19 i inoculated 17 days ago

Now, im not gonna be a stubborn idiot and birth it or anything. I don't wanna contaminate the rest of my cakes but is there possible that the mycelium ate what ever contaminant that was in there?

Looks like some mold at the top still. If there was more it's possible some
MYC grew over it. Just toss it and wash the jar out with dish soap

You could still try growing it on its own depending how it looks when you open it.

It does kinda look like myc just grew around it but I’ve definitely had myc run over and kill mold on plates before. Idk if it smothers it or what.
