who here uses a propane burner for pressure cooking?

How long does a tank of propane last you? How powerful is the burner you're using?

I am searching for something to use with my AA 941. Been looking at something like this

or

I want to use it indoors either in a ventilated room or my garage. I heard the paint burns off real bad and shit the first time so that made me start looking at the stainless ones as well but I've no idea if it's worth it. If all the paint will burn off in the first use, maybe its not a big deal.

I contacted them a while back and they said that 11000btu is ideal and 12000btu was the maximum you should be using for the 941.
Mine is quite op but i don't use it on max. I use it at maybe half whack or less when getting it up to temp. light the flame before putting on the unit otherwise you can cover it in soot when you light it up. When it's at pressure i can turn it to the absolute minimum flame and it sits there happy.

I got a medium sized gas bottle about the same size as the pc and it lasts quite a few runs. I haven't logged how much it uses but i have no complaints.

I use mine in a garage with the door open.

Righton, thank you. I've pretty much always had a fan on in the room. I'll cut that out and see if i can baby the tubs less.
I do appreciate the pointers.

Anecdotal evidence, obviously try your own experiments BUT wanted to add some info! Whenever i pour plates, i get no less than 25 plates from 500mL agar, usually between 25 and 30. I don't think i've ever poured just 20 plates from 500mL, so they are on the thin side. Kept some plates around from July of last year, and September. They were wrapped with Glad ClingWrap, left on a shelf at room temp, upwrapped/opened for transfers twice.  Transferred them both the other day (April) and they both grew just fine! SO that means that even thin-poured plates should/will last 9 months, easily 6 months+ wrapped at room temp. If they were in a fridge, i would expect even longer, that's the next experiment!

Donor plates on the left, new plates on right, for visual aid of how thin they are. Obviously they could be thinner, but i certainly wouldn't call them thick.

[For clarity; that reads 09/25/19 -> 4/14/20 and 07/16/20 -> 4/13/20]

Any canadians who use the home hardware 5kg coir blocks

how much water do you use? I have never used these things finishing up the last of my eco earth though going to start using them exclusively probably its so much cheaper for the 5kg blocks

I dont use verm so I may have to just adjust a recipe anyways but I am curious if they hold around same volume as eco earth or more?

It's trich aspergillus niger  The donor plate had a couple patches of green, and i knew it was sporulating, i was hoping to grab a clean piece buttfuckin whatever. The bigger test was if the agar was still viable.

Yup  :cubie:

I like to hydrate the entire brick then I leave it in a tub with no lid on and take my time using. The coir is really that contam resistant that you can leave it sitting hydrated in open air for weeks or even months and I've yet to see mold grow on the coir because of it.
I even dropped a mug of coffee in a tub full of coir once it was the last of my coir and I thought it was going to go bad because of it. Nope I mixed it in and it sat around for another 3 weeks before I finished it off.

I've been having trouble with too wet. Maybe I can dial it in better taking more time with it.

Shadow, I have the top bayou classic one, I have used it twice now and it's excellent.  My brother hates the smell of PC'd chicken and grains so I just bought one and run it in our yard, it kicks ass and has made things easier.  Set it up, turn a hose on, fill it with water, crank the heat etc.  Easy as fuck, worth it, it's solid too. Pretty sure a propane tank runs 20 hours.  I seen on youtube the burning off of paint, my paint never burned off though and I ran it for at least 5 hours total so far, doesnt smell etc.  Worth the buy

I gotta look up the BTU but it’s more than enough, I remember looking at burners and made sure the low end was ok for the pc but could scale up later if I want.

It smelled a little weird the first couple times. Kinda like when you get new brakes on the car.

I got my propane burner from a commercial retailer because I heard places that supply restaurants have higher quality items but who knows if that’s really true lol

 No those are only sold in canada !

I know they are sold in more countries than just canada, but Every brand of coir I've tried varies, unfortunately. I was hoping to hear from someone with experience with the brand "beyond peat" that is made for home hardware stores in Canada but I think there's only like a few regulars on here who use them.

Interestingly I noticed on these blocks (first time I've ever seen this) it says that due to environmental differences between harvest dates, they don't recommend an exact amount of water and instead say to over hydrate and squeeze it out. Maybe that explains why I get coir that varies so much in the volume of water it takes...

I am going to try with 7 gallons and if that is too much I will squeeze it out and do some trial and error  but hopefully it is right on point or close. I am tired of eco earth being all over the place, lately I really can't even get the same volume of water to work with the same amount of dry coir (weighed to the 0.1gram).

Thanks for answering, I appreciate it

One thing I noticed tooo...these are split into 4 little thin blocks that must be around 1250grams each...so I am better off using a 1/4 5kg block and using it for 2 monotubs even if I need to make a smaller amount.

My eco earth has been getting shittier. Last two 3 packs I weighed were under 1800 grams total

Just prepped my first three grain jars with rye berries and made one quart LME LC.

inoculated two grain jars and the LC Jar with black morel LC wyringe, The third grain jar got blue oyster LC.

Now 3 days later there are obvious signs of growth in the Blue Oyster Jar and nothing in the other 3.

I had tried putting some of the black morel LC onto two agar plates, nothing I can see there either and that's been four days.

So I'm wondering if I still see no growth in the next couple days wold it be fine to just pc them again and noc it with something else?
