Canberra crew - Hello and a question * 3
    #26623059 - 04/23/20 06:05 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hello Canberrans. Long time lurker and recent poster. I am relatively new to the area, and have not yet adequately explored and canvassed all the neaby nature reserves, of which there aremany. I live northside, walking distance from Mulligan's flat and not far from Majura pines. I am new to subs, and foraging in north QLD basically consisted of looking for cow dung. It seems much more complex here (to a noob at least).

Searching the forum shows that most canberrans head for the brindies at this time of year. However, before driving out I was wondering if anybody knows which trails are completely closed off due to Covid? I.e. is it worth making the trip out there if everything is closed anyway.
Not asking for specific locations!
Thanks everyone, love the community.

Welcome, is there an abundance of wild shrooms in Australia? Never would have guessed. Was thinking of moving there

There's a few Aussies here, but I don't know any in Canberra.

Here, have some digital shrooms.  :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Hi umbrellagirl,
Namadgi and Tidbinbilla are the only closures I know of at the moment. Brindabella is open, worth the trip out in this lovely weather.

There's other Aussies lurking all over the place mate, they just have secret codes and stuff that only their countrymen can understand.

And a very warm g'day to you all. FYI, Canberra is the capital of Australia; 2.5 hours from Sydney and a beautiful place to visit or reside.

Oblonsky- Thanks for the head's up, I might go out this weekend. I went for a ride at Stromlo this morning and it was PACKED. I was quite surprised.
Northener- Good to meet you mate, I grew up in the far north.

Hey

I'm pretty close to Mission Beach. Quiet place now with all this lockdown and stuff... not a tourist to be seen. We just need all the hippies to come back and the slickers go fuck off and it'll be like the good old days.

hi umbrella girl. I too moved to Canberra recently and have been considering mushroom hunting for the first time. I have scoped a few pine plantations not too far from the city in the past month with no luck. I planed a trip to Brindibella last weekend but turned back at the dirt road before brindibella thinking the road was not suitable for the car and instead had a stroll near Stromlo. I am not sure if the weather isn't cool enough or we haven't received as much rain as of yet because I couldn't find any subs. Did you have any luck finding anything yet?

Umbrella girl... I'm not too far from you.
We went out exploring today, but I think we too late to the local places. But we did get some Saffron Milk Caps for dinner!

I am curious as to where in the Brindies people are going... it is a big place!

I'm hoping with the rain in the next couple of days we might get lucky!

Hi Kinkaei and Rumply, good to hear from you both. I have also been keeping an eye out at the pine forests, and I reckon it will be a good weekend to go out to the Brindabellas. My eyes are always looking down now when I am walking or cycling! Today I went through some pines and saw plenty of mushrooms, no subs though. I am interested to know what is edible here, any tips?

Edible- saffron milk caps mostly, but not psychedelic. I wouldnt recommend any ither species as it is hard to distinguish the posinous ones.I hope your trip to brindies is successful. Let us know how you go .

Went for a walk in the freezing cold today and founds lots of varieties, but we have no idea if they are the right ones. None have turned blue yet, but thought that was because they are waterlogged a bit. It would be great if there was a local that could show us what we are looking for.

G'day Rumply - if you're unsure of what specimens you have acquired, request an ID on the forums. PMANZ is also an identification group you can join on Facebook.

No luck today unfortunately, but from searching the forums it appears that there have been finds up there recently. Interested to see what you found, Rumply. Kinkaei and Werner_Oblonsky I sent you both PMs :mushroom2:

Howdy Umbrellagirl, I'm a northsider as well but live down in Palmerston. I took a short trip out to the Brindies today and also turned around after a short distance on the dirt road like kinkaei did. The car just vibrates too much and I had no idea where to stop to take a look. There were a number of people out picking the saffron milk caps so I was happy to see some hunters getting what they came for.

I hope to find a nice community here and have some luck in the not too distant future. But with rascal kids at home I might need to save up some wifey bucks before I ask to take another half day off
