Help a brother out... * 5
    #26622575 - 04/23/20 02:48 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Lets say your 60 something year old grandpa/father/uncle
wants to get his first ever smartphone, budget around 5 or 6 hundred dollars.
He doesn't game or watch many videos, but does take some pics and videos,
surfs news sites and the Shroomery.
Needs a large screen with high visibility, decent sound and simplicity.

What are the major differences between iPhone and Android?
Maybe just skip iphone because I never use a Mac or iPad anyway?

How about differences with Samsung Galaxy S vs Note.
Maybe just get a cheaper Galaxy A20? It has the big screen I want(6.4")

So who has what phone, what's good, any models to avoid?  :hatsoff:
:themoreyouknow: . . . :peace:

If thats all your grandpa wants to do, it doesnt need to cost $600

Google best budget smartphones under $300

Also Android, cause fuck Apple

I have a Motorola something that cost about $240, never let me down

I’ve only ever used an iPhone since the first one released. I might be a dumb ass fanboy. I have no way of knowing. I’ve never owned anything else.

I have used other people phones and they seems weird to me.

Go for a big screen with good resolution if the person is 60 something unless they have perfect eyes. Readings small screen sucks. Then camera performance would be 2nd criteria.

You don’t need a Apple computer if you have the phone.

Do they listen to music? Having music on your smartphone could be a big deal.

iphones tend to be more expensive and they don't last as long.  I'd definitely go for one of the budget phones.

I have been hearing good things about the apple iphone se. Performs like a high end smartphone and costs $399.

I have an iphone SE, but this is the smaller of the iphones since 2016. Iphone xr fully unlocked can be had for less than 500 used off amazon.

There's a point around $250-300 where you start getting diminishing returns for your money. The A20 is honestly a good phone. I can't imagine you want intensive gaming. You're probably going to want to take pictures so I'd look for something with a half decent camera. The pixel 4a would be in your price range but likely won't come out for a few months. The 3a is a good phone too, nice camera for the price IIRC

Just picked up new nokia 2.3 for 119$. It has all those perks you mentioned. Android one. No need to go for apple for extra 500$ imho.
Big screen too. Looks nice too imho.

Hi Vinsue

The major pro with Apple is the seamless connectivity between apple devices. You're not going to have any issues and its pretty user friendly and reliable. Its why Apple is so popular but of course its not cheap. If you already have a macbook I'd say go with Apple and get yourself an apple tv.

Cons
- Expensive
- Forced apple system
- Can't change memory disk size
- No headphone jack unless its the 6th gen phones or old SE variant.

A new SE, apple's cheapest flagship is about to come out priced at $400.

Android

Pros
- Cheaper with similar power and memory options if not more compared to Apple
- Play store, endless amounts of apps vs apple store
- Ability to tailor phone to your liking and the models before the galaxy s20 have headphone jacks. The current line does not.
- SD card slot for expandable storage.
- Better software support with 3rd party apps vs apple

Cons
- screen mirroring/casting can be a pain
- If you care about fancy features like facial recognition, finger print i.e. the cheaper phones don't have these things and generally have lower ram sizes so multi tasking isn't fast.
- Apps can sometimes be buggy depending on what model you have
and due to the nature of play store where virtually any kind of app can be published, where as apple is much more strict in its app review process to be published.

If all you do is browse the web like others have said above then no need for a flagship phone.

In terms of the camera, both the latest Iphone and galaxy/notes can record in 4k video at 60fps. So can the s10+ and the previous iphone X generation. Before those gens I think the maximum is 2k but I'm pretty sure you can upscale it. Either way any of the latest flagships of the last 3-4 years have great cameras in general, especially if you use 3rd party apps to tune the lenses to your liking.

I will say these newer iPhone cameras are insane.

I love my pixel, I paid $500 for it, worth every penny, I use my computer very little even because it's in line with a PC at this point.

Not true on new android phones.
this cheap nokia has facial regonition(you dont really want to use this, just a trick to open your phone while you are in hand cuffs)

problems with mirroring, nope. Have not seen this bug in any android so far.

As far as camera goes have not tested it yet but really doubt that it is sub par.

Nokia 2.3

    Processor. Mediatek MT6761 Helio A22.
    RAM. 2GB.
    Storage. 32GB.
    Display. 6.2 inches.
Camera. 13 MP + 2 MP depth sensor.
    Battery. Non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery.

Dont really see now reason to buy the flagship unless you really work from your phone or need it for status symbol for 1000 bucks when 119 gives you functional smartphone.

The cameras are largely the same among different manufacturers it's the software they they use to interpret the information it gathers that makes or breaks the photo quality.

I'm gonna put another vote in for any of the Google Pixel phones. I have two and am eagerly awaiting the fifth iteration.

Bare-bones android. I fucking like that. I like that a lot.

Samsung probably best bet but I'm a brand snob.

Get him an indestructible palm pilot.:jimmies:

Or an IPhone if he’s an apple user

Or a google - or - Galaxy if he’s a PC/windows user

They can be older models so long as they are decent at doing most of what he needs for the right price.

My old iPhone 5 s does everything I need and more, never upgraded bc never needed to

But , most importantly teach by showing him how to use the damn thing and some of the nifty apps he might really benefit from.

Calculator , Calander, Siri Voice activation web searches, texting , web surfing, camera, voice recorder, Weather, clock alarm clock, video chatting,  notepad for writing keeping notes etc.

All that jazz.

The new low cost iPhone is hands down the best low cost (relatively) phone on the market. It’s really powerful, has a great camera, and the price is lower than anything with comparable specs.

I manage 22 cell phone lines for my day job and have done so for a decade. iPhones are the most reliable and thus are ultimately the cheaper phones in the long run. We use both Android and Apple because people like to join tribes and fight about devices that do the same thing, but there’s no doubt that over my ten years iPhones are the better value device. This isn’t me picking favorites because I’m not the type to advertise products for free, I’m just telling it like it is.

Yeah I’ve seen something like 300 phones in the last decade and we get like 18% to 22% better life out of iPhones. The number isn’t solid because the definition of life for a phone varies wildly. But that isn’t even the important part. The tech calls and support issues are 70% less with iPhones.

The updates for iphones are designed to make older ones stop working well.  Apple even admitted that in court.

Most of the advantages in ease of use of the iphone went away with solidity of the samsung galaxy platform. I use both and find both easy to use.

Flow chart:
1. Do i want to store GB of music, photos and videos?

If yes get a galaxy and buy a 256gb microsd
If no apple may still be an option

2. Do i want to carry my phone in my pocket?

This determines max size, bigger is better, end of story, but i personally want to be able to carry my phone in my pocket

3. Do i need the extras like wireless charging, super cameras and waterproofing?

If yes then probably a flagship phone is what you want.

If no then the samsung a50 and a70 are both great options with great camera setups. I have the a50 since i put it in my pocket.

I do not recommend going with a google pixel or a motorola or lg for the reason that you are learning a system and when it is time to upgrade in a few years you dont want to relearn a new one. LG and moto could easily disappear and google is for geeks.

Apple is also really great if you dont want lots of storage.

Either way you should get an otter case and one of their glass screen protectors. Dont get it at the phone place without checking otter direct and seeing if you can get a 20% coupon direct from them.

You may not believe it but there is a significant difference in a good 2 layer case from otter over stuff from amazon.

Like someone else said. You can get a decent phone that will do the job for under $300. My phone is samsung something or other and I literally use it to talk to the ones I love and get on shroomery. That's it. And I got it new for like $140  ......also, fuck apple unless you are a materialistic teenage girl.

Edit: didnt see koods post....no offense koods :shroomeryhead: :lolsy:

They had to admit to it and you can now choose to not participate in the throttling. It will result in reduced battery life to achieve same performance. But all phones suffer from the same battery fatigue unless you have a phone with battery that can be changed by the user. Those are pretty rare.

This probably won’t affect Vinsue’s proposed use though. There’s nothing battery or processing intensive mentioned.

From my view, Moto G7 Plus is the best featured budget smart phone atm, followed closely by the Pixel 3a.

Most would prefer the Pixel 3a features though. Close call. I bought the Moto for the dual sims.

I have the A20. Cost: FREE. Boost mobile gives them away when you change services to them. No strings attached. No contracts.

I always had a Galaxy and I can't tell, by using it, why this phone cost so little. It has been flawless and the picture quality is ridiculous. I'm using it now.

Hey Vinsue. I'm a bit of a tech luver to some degree. I've owned Iphnes and Android phones. Iphones do prefrom better that Android phones, but it's not noticeable on most pplications. They are generally more expensive too. Even the Iphone SE (One of my favourite phones btw) doesn't live up to your requirements, it's too small, (even the new version).

As others have said, you've requested some pretty broad requirements. The Google Pixel 3 has been brought up and recommended a lot.
I've never used a Pixel 3, but i used a 2 and liked it very much.
With your requirements what i'd suggest is for you to get last years flagship. You'll save a mint and still get an awesome device.
The Pixel 3 is soon to be superseded. Wait for the new Pixels to be released and reap the benefits of that hefty discount of the seemingly obsolete product 'Pixel 3'

+1 for phoneareana. I use it a lot. I didn't think it'd be a great resource for Vinsue considering his limited requirements.

Anyone ever figure out why Iphones sound like the call volume only goes to 1?  There’s no way it’s supposed to be like that but fully cranked it sounds like the other person on the line is whispering.

I fuckin’ hate Apple, man.  The company is shit.  I’m glad Steve Jobs is dead..

I have learned to like the split screen feature. For example i have been doing zoom watch alongs with friends for the dead n co saturday night shows and being able to split the screen between zoom and the music is very convient.  Likewise there are times where i might be watching a tutorial and making a list of items needed at the same time or otherwise taking notes.

Even though i acknowledge Apple for making a phone that is more powerful than it's duopoly opponent, i do so only on a technological standpoint. From a practical stand point which is a much more influentual factor as far as i'm concerned i think that the Operating system Android is the superior choice.

The thing with Apple is that it had a brilliant business strategy. Google just saw a market copied the software and sold it to giants like Samsung and HTC (It just evolved into something superior overtime). Apple introduced the capacitive touch screen though and formed touch screen interaction basically as we know it today.  Upon looking at it hindsight, i can't help but appreciate them for their tactics and approach. As far as business goes. Before the ipod, their main focus was the pc. They were becoming close to obsolete to Windows. Steve Jobs instigated the Ipod which generated enough funds to make further generations and finally enter the cell phone market.
What a genius strategy. If you can't beat them at their own game, change the game. Microsoft after several attempts has conceded defeat and retired from the cell phone game.  Shame actually because personally i really like their tiles a Windows phone 8 launcher on my Galaxy sometimes, (funny enough i don't use Windows on my computer lol).
Now Steve Jobs has passed the business seems more focused on competing rather than crafting their own path. I didn't like where Apple was going before but i respected them for their method of getting there, now i think it's just a rotton core with is absent of any originality, leaching every last penny it can from the suckers that fell into brand loyalty back when the brand at least had some morsel of integrity.

Great input everyone. I guess it's Fuck Apple.
Ya know, I had to look up 'flagship' I wasn't really familiar with that non nautical meaning.
and 'Otterbox' case, definitely like that recommendation.

I'm buying through the wifes carrier, Consumer Cellular which is catered to boomers,
she's getting a new Moto G-7 and adding another line for me.
They don't have a lot of models available, they're 'pre-reviewed' to be senior friendly.
I did like the Moto's specs, better battery for example, but we shouldn't have identical phones.

Think I'll get the A20, decent cameras, 6.4" screen, it does has a headphone jack, right?
Newer ones don't have that ( I think I read that somewhere).
The money I save on the cheaper phone will now go towards my soon to be replaced
half broke Dell dinosaur laptop running on Windows 7. :gc:
Probably will be the topic for an upcoming thread, too.:takingnotes:

Thanks again for everyone's help. :hatsoff:

I'm a little intimidated with this part...

      Confession time.

I don't know an F4 key  from an F you. Practically computer illeterate.
Never had any computer science studys that most people grew up with.
I never learned to type back in HS and never gamed, not even Space Invaders(1978) or PacMan(1980).
I hated gaming. I was into pinball and truly felt dissed with the 'new technology'.

I feel better now, getting that off my chest:oldman:

In stead of starting a new thread, I'll just ask this here.
What are some nifty or cool Apps I might appreciate?

I heard someone mention a Samsung Health app somewhere
maybe a sky watch app., other science type apps.
Typo maps etc. are cool, but I can't hike anymore with a bad knee.
What are some favorites?

Yes it has a head phone jack. But the better thing is wireless bluetooth ear buds. You can listen to music and pick up phone calls without your phone as long as it is within 30 feet I think.

Edit: FYI all my photos are with the A20.

So I did get the Samsung A20 with 3GB RAM/32GB ROM, and it has " Support for External microSD™ Card up to 512GB".

I downloaded some apps: Zoom, Audubon birds, SkyView and StarTracker, See A Satellite, Firefox,
GoogleEarth, PNC bank, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter,Wunderground weather, CBS, Fox, a heath tracker from my hospital,
probably a few more, and my usage is already at 26.68 MB.

I think it's time to get either a 128 or this 256 card:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MB-MC256-Everything-But-Stromboli/dp/B07P2H133G/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=samsung+galaxy+memory+card+256gb&qid=1588778090&sr=8-4

And what the hell is a "Everything But Stromboli (TM) Micro Card Reader"? Can I even use that?

Thoughts?    Is 256 more than I'd really need since I don't game on it? :justdontknow:
Also, what's the difference between my Mobile data used (26.68MB) and Wi-Fi data (3.73MB)?
One other thing, do you think me buying a 10 GB/month shared data plan is enough?

Thanks again for everyone's input, I'm loving my new 'computer'.
I don't really consider it a phone because I still only use my other phone,
though it's nice having another line.

Funny side note, I haven't given my new number to anyone and I already got a message
offering me extended warranty on a car I don't even own. :wtf:

128gb is probably plenty but price difference wise I would go for the 256gb to future proof yourself.

Also you may want to reinstall the apps after the card is put in so that the app can leverage the card for storage.

Wifi usage is free and doesnt count toward monthly usage charges
Data usage outside the house is where they get you.
10gb shared per month could be good depending who it is shared with, if it is you and the wife it is probably too much

I would recommend buying a second hand, not so old, high-end model. I bought a galaxy S6 in a phone chop shop in a mall in 2017, it still works perfectly, came with a yearlong chop shop warranty, and it was cheap as chips too.

Modern phones however are brittle so two things I highly highly advise are:

1) a screen protector for your smartphone, screens scratch over time, but a screen protector is like a disposable screen you can replace for a dollar whenever you need to.

2) a phone wallet. Cushions against falls and scratches and can double as a wallet if you need it to.

There are some pretty good phones at great prices among little known brands like Umidigi and Cubot. The Umidigi F1, for instance, has some pretty stellar stats at the price range, and boasts a huge 5150mAh battery.

You might be right. I just had a look at the reviews on the page I linked to. Most of the bad comments relate to not being able to update to Android 10, but there are some others. Still, I've had one and it did everything it was meant to at half the price of a big brand phone with similar specs.

If you already used 26g of data then obviously less than 10g is not enough unless you change your habits such as use wifi when possible and limit your dowloads and internet usage until you are on connected to wifi.

Data usage and storage are two different things measured by megabytes and gigabytes. The card you are thinking of buying is for storage, not data.

If u can afford it, get the 512GB. It will make life easier down the road. But im sure 256GB wi be fine as well.

Wi-Fi data is data used thru a WiFi (router) hot spot while celluar data uses your cell phone towers around your city/state. The more WiFi u use, the more celluar data u will have left to use.

Any micro SD card reader will work, just make sure its has a USB cable or adapter for it.

Also, most phones these days have a "Cloud", which is online-based file storage. That way u dont have to remove the SD Card to retrieve your files on your computer. An app usually handles this Online Cloud option.

Theres also the option of connecting a USB cable between your phone and your computer, which is very useful and i recommend using that method instead of removing the micro SD card from your phone.

Hope this helps! Welcome to the Future :nerd:
