Help a brother out... 5

Lets say your 60 something year old grandpa/father/uncle wants to get his first ever smartphone, budget around 5 or 6 hundred dollars. He doesn't game or watch many videos, but does take some pics and videos, surfs news sites and the Shroomery. Needs a large screen with high visibility, decent sound and simplicity.
What are the major differences between iPhone and Android? Maybe just skip iphone because I never use a Mac or iPad anyway?
How about differences with Samsung Galaxy S vs Note. Maybe just get a cheaper Galaxy A20? It has the big screen I want(6.4")
So who has what phone, what's good, any models to avoid?

If thats all your grandpa wants to do, it doesnt need to cost $600
Google best budget smartphones under $300
Also Android, cause fuck Apple
I have a Motorola something that cost about $240, never let me down

I’ve only ever used an iPhone since the first one released. I might be a dumb ass fanboy. I have no way of knowing. I’ve never owned anything else.
I have used other people phones and they seems weird to me.
Go for a big screen with good resolution if the person is 60 something unless they have perfect eyes. Readings small screen sucks. Then camera performance would be 2nd criteria.
You don’t need a Apple computer if you have the phone.
Do they listen to music? Having music on your smartphone could be a big deal.

iphones tend to be more expensive and they don't last as long. I'd definitely go for one of the budget phones.

I have been hearing good things about the apple iphone se. Performs like a high end smartphone and costs $399.

I have an iphone SE, but this is the smaller of the iphones since 2016. Iphone xr fully unlocked can be had for less than 500 used off amazon.

There's a point around $250-300 where you start getting diminishing returns for your money. The A20 is honestly a good phone. I can't imagine you want intensive gaming. You're probably going to want to take pictures so I'd look for something with a half decent camera. The pixel 4a would be in your price range but likely won't come out for a few months. The 3a is a good phone too, nice camera for the price IIRC

Just picked up new nokia 2.3 for 119$. It has all those perks you mentioned. Android one. No need to go for apple for extra 500$ imho. Big screen too. Looks nice too imho.

I have a Google Pixel 3a and the price wasn't that much (I think it was on sale when I got it in maybe last October). It's overall a good phone.

Hi Vinsue
The major pro with Apple is the seamless connectivity between apple devices. You're not going to have any issues and its pretty user friendly and reliable. Its why Apple is so popular but of course its not cheap. If you already have a macbook I'd say go with Apple and get yourself an apple tv.
Cons - Expensive - Forced apple system - Can't change memory disk size - No headphone jack unless its the 6th gen phones or old SE variant.
A new SE, apple's cheapest flagship is about to come out priced at $400.
Android
Pros - Cheaper with similar power and memory options if not more compared to Apple - Play store, endless amounts of apps vs apple store - Ability to tailor phone to your liking and the models before the galaxy s20 have headphone jacks. The current line does not. - SD card slot for expandable storage. - Better software support with 3rd party apps vs apple
Cons - screen mirroring/casting can be a pain - If you care about fancy features like facial recognition, finger print i.e. the cheaper phones don't have these things and generally have lower ram sizes so multi tasking isn't fast. - Apps can sometimes be buggy depending on what model you have and due to the nature of play store where virtually any kind of app can be published, where as apple is much more strict in its app review process to be published.
If all you do is browse the web like others have said above then no need for a flagship phone.
In terms of the camera, both the latest Iphone and galaxy/notes can record in 4k video at 60fps. So can the s10+ and the previous iphone X generation. Before those gens I think the maximum is 2k but I'm pretty sure you can upscale it. Either way any of the latest flagships of the last 3-4 years have great cameras in general, especially if you use 3rd party apps to tune the lenses to your liking.

I will say these newer iPhone cameras are insane.
I love my pixel, I paid $500 for it, worth every penny, I use my computer very little even because it's in line with a PC at this point.

Not true on new android phones. this cheap nokia has facial regonition(you dont really want to use this, just a trick to open your phone while you are in hand cuffs)
problems with mirroring, nope. Have not seen this bug in any android so far.
As far as camera goes have not tested it yet but really doubt that it is sub par.
Nokia 2.3
Processor. Mediatek MT6761 Helio A22. RAM. 2GB. Storage. 32GB. Display. 6.2 inches. Camera. 13 MP + 2 MP depth sensor. Battery. Non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery.
Dont really see now reason to buy the flagship unless you really work from your phone or need it for status symbol for 1000 bucks when 119 gives you functional smartphone.

The cameras are largely the same among different manufacturers it's the software they they use to interpret the information it gathers that makes or breaks the photo quality.

I'm gonna put another vote in for any of the Google Pixel phones. I have two and am eagerly awaiting the fifth iteration.
Bare-bones android. I fucking like that. I like that a lot.
Samsung probably best bet but I'm a brand snob.

Get him an indestructible palm pilot.
Or an IPhone if he’s an apple user
Or a google - or - Galaxy if he’s a PC/windows user
They can be older models so long as they are decent at doing most of what he needs for the right price.
My old iPhone 5 s does everything I need and more, never upgraded bc never needed to
But , most importantly teach by showing him how to use the damn thing and some of the nifty apps he might really benefit from.
Calculator , Calander, Siri Voice activation web searches, texting , web surfing, camera, voice recorder, Weather, clock alarm clock, video chatting, notepad for writing keeping notes etc.
All that jazz.

The new low cost iPhone is hands down the best low cost (relatively) phone on the market. It’s really powerful, has a great camera, and the price is lower than anything with comparable specs.
I manage 22 cell phone lines for my day job and have done so for a decade. iPhones are the most reliable and thus are ultimately the cheaper phones in the long run. We use both Android and Apple because people like to join tribes and fight about devices that do the same thing, but there’s no doubt that over my ten years iPhones are the better value device. This isn’t me picking favorites because I’m not the type to advertise products for free, I’m just telling it like it is.
