BRF Cakes Pins abort overnight * 1
    #26621871 - 04/23/20 09:04 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hello,

I am doing BRF cakes. I did not dunk for 24h, just took out of jars and rolled in verm.

Everything was going well, a lot of pins appeared.

Woke up yesterday to find out that many pins are aborting - confirmed this morning.

In the mean time i have healthy mushrooms growing on some of the cakes, and i have 2 cakes where there are no grown mushrooms, just aborting pins.

I mist when the cakes absorb all the droplets from the misting - 3 times a day roughly. I also consider the verm as a factor who absorbs much of the misting.

12/12 On-Off lightning with a 3600 lum bulb - couldn't find a better one. The light is not direct.

I vent for about 30 sec 4-5 times a day.

I also am confused on what is this thing growing on top of the pin...

Thanks a lot for the help!

Aborts are normal but not rehydrating the cake before fruiting seems like it would really hurt the grow.

Those cap things are normal it’s a super common mutation. I normally get it on golden teacher.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Do you think i should root out or cut out (idk which one is better) the aborts and dunk and roll the cakes?

I read in your post for Cake Watering Tips that you dunk for no longer than 12h.

It is kind of hard for me to follow it without pictorial, but here is what i understood:

You dunk for no longer than 12h in the fridge, changing water every 4h if possible. By dunking i mean completely put them under water for 12h.
Then you roll in verm and dont mist until mid fruiting.

Is that correct?

thanks in advance!

You can dunk for longer.. especially in the fridge.  Changing water that often might be a little over kill.  I think I was thinking more if you weren’t using the fridge.  If your cakes don’t pin in like 10 days, I’d recommend misting the casing.  Think I’m going to have to update those cake tips or at least look at it again.. my opinions may have changed slightly.

Basically you want to make sure the cake has plenty of water all through til the end of the flush without over doing it

I'd definitely dunk for more than 12h, here's an experiment I did long time ago regarding water absorption in BRF cakes https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24739690

A noob question but...
Since i didn't dunk and all my pins on 1 cake aborted, does that mean that flush #1 failed and now im hoping on flush #2?

Also, does flush #2-3 yield always less than flush #1?

Thanks for the tips

Two of the cakes are soaking right now in the fridge.

The others that still had fruits on them, i mist as soon as i see the water absorbed from the surface. Since i didn't dunk any of them, continuous misting and venting seem to be doing a good job keeping many of the non-aborted pins growing with ~ 1" a day and more pins appearing.

Will roll the dunked cakes tonight and update when there's something to update (hopefully soon lol)

thanks all for the support!

So what about the comment in that thread that less hydration led to faster colonization.
When you looked into his experiments, were you not convinced.

I see a lot of variation in dunking, I started with the shoebox tek where
she stacked shoeboxes to make sure the substrate was under water for, um, 3 hours I think...

Now I'm in the camp off "side water" for a couple hours and pour off excess.

I'm just thinking MORE is not necessarily better...

Edit: Oh shoot, old thread, sorry, was lost in researching pins! Maybe I should have PM'd him.

Well I have no reason to doubt anyone if they feel they have had faster colonization with drier substrates, it's still very anecdotal so hard to know what someone might have referred to as 'drier' substrate. All I know is that my side by side experiment documents exactly how much water was used and what the actual difference was between the drier and the wetter substrates and in my case the drier cakes colonized noticeably slower and this difference in colonization speed was documented with pics so it's easy to understand.
