Found this while gardening anyone have an idea on what species of Leccinum it could be?
Location- found in Gippsland Victoria under a bush that was a few meters away from a large silver birch tree. Gills- Slightly yellowish pores that bruise brown when handled. Stipe- Solid with black scales Spore print colour- is Brown-Dark Brown Smell- Faintly pleasant mushroom smell. Almost no smell at all. Taste- similar to how it smells very mild mushroom taste. Bruising- No bruising observed on the flesh or stipe. Pores bruise a dark brown when handled.

I can't find much on Leccinum spp. in Australia, but this looks close to what we in Europe would call L. scabrum.

Thanks Anglerfish. That's good to hear. I've heard that they've been introduced to New Zealand but couldn't find any information as to if they've been seen in Australia as well..

Thanks for the second opinion. If they are the real deal I certainly intend to. I've eaten them in before in Europe and they were delicious.. Though I'll wait till tomorrow to see if anyone else chimes in.

If it isn't leccinum scabrum, then it's very closely related. It's safe to eat. Personally I think leccinums taste awful 😁

Leccinum scabrum is a birch associate. What kind of trees were around?

There are a few large silver birch trees in the garden bed where it was found.
