Hi All,
I am an inexperienced grower. I grow through trial and error, I get a bag or two going every fews months but that's it. So prior to anyone reading this and thinking man, this guy is stupid, keep in mind, it's just a small little side hobby. I don't really deeply care if a batch fails or succeeds. If it fails it's not meant to be. Apologies about the post length as well.
My most recent experiment is with growing Penis Envy's. In the past I have grown Golden Teachers successfully (and unsuccessfully for that matter due to pests lol). These Penis Envy's however are far less resistant to contamination so it was much easier for me to fuck these up. I grow in bags. When they start to pin, I place them in a closed off tub with tin foil on the bottom and cut the bag. I had two bags on this most recent experiment. The first bag, once I transferred the brick to the tub, the following day, I saw what I believe was green small patches of a contam that was starting to propagate my mycelium. After sending a picture to my buddy, he thought it looks more blue than green and it was likely just bruising. I'm not sure one way or another but either way, for some reason I decided I was going to spray down the areas with a bit of vinegar. My logic in thinking this was that possibly I could kill off the mold areas and there was enough mycelium that would be unaffected, the bruising would heal and some mycelium would remain healthy. Well since then, I have started to have a gold type of mold begin to propagate the areas I sprayed with vinegar. Other parts of the brick still appear to be growing fine. Although, that's just what I think bc I have never grown penis envy's before. They looked strange when they started growing before the infection and I read online that PE's can look this way when grown in a bag. So I guess my question is on this batch, what are the risks of eating mushrooms that have a contam of some sort? I know that the Golden Teachers I grew previously, by the time the third flush came about, a significant amount of green mold was growing on top of the brick I had them growing in and me and a friend ate those, were fine and probably had one of the more intense trips of our lives. My friend seems to think that the contams only really affect the mycelium and not the mushrooms as the mushrooms have beat out the infection. Is this true? In the picture of the one batch, do these look like normal early stage PE's?
My next question is on a second batch. I have that growing in a separate tub that I just transferred today. I believe these have a bacteria contam on them because of a brownish looking substance that is hardened on top of the caps that are starting to form. Although, again I cannot tell because they were pressing into the plastic of the bag when sprouting. Therefore, I believe maybe it's possible that it's just the caps that had their growth interfered with and are just looking strange?
Appreciate anyone's time in advance! I love the feedback I have received through this community! I understand I could research this stuff in depth myself but sometimes human experience is far more effective than what the internet has to offer.
