Films to you that are overrated that everyone else seemed to like.
    #26620228 - 04/22/20 03:08 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I'm going to start off with Fight Club. It has been airing on HBO or Cinemax (or one of the movie channels). Haven't seen it since I was around college age. And then I could take it or leave it and never saw it again (until today actually).

Decided to watch it again to see if I was too young to see the genius of it. Well after watching it again I pretty much feel the same way -- could take it or leave it. I mean it wasn't bad. It was entertaining in spots but by the time the credits rolled around I really felt the same way about it that I did the first time.

I just remember when it came out a lot of people I knew could recall like every line from memory and said it was their favorite movie of all-time. And I still hear it occasionally all these years later. And nothing wrong with that of course...this is all subjective and I know for a fact I got some movies that are among my favorites that a lot of people would be like WTF.

But anyways, what's an example of a very popular film that you personally think is overrated?

I didn’t like fight club much either it was alright but I would say any Will Ferrel movie, none of that shit is funny it’s like everyone is doing him a favor because of how many movies he has like “oh yeah Will Ferrell step brothers hahaha”

Napoleon dynamite

Hate it

Talladega nights hated it

Step brothers hated it

Love Brad Pitt's character in Snatch better than fight club...

But love Edward norton and Brad in fight club

Once upon a time in Hollywood is cool too

Wasn’t slutty enough.

Also it was basically plato’s allegory of the cave but with a sci-fi movie magic retelling.

The first time I saw The Matrix I was on a stout dose of L and I remember being blown away

:mindblown:

But then years later I tried watching it again and I remember not even making it through the movie and thinking the it didn't hold up well at all

That's how I felt when I watched it the 2nd time anyway

Here's another one for me -- The Exorcist.

It is always at or near the top of the debate for scariest film of all-time, and when I did watch it -- by myself and at night, it didn't do much for me at all.

Interstellar didn't really do it for me.

I also love the first Jurrasic Park. Jurrasic World was comparably terrible.

Haha , not exactly 🤔.

It’s about some cops who get called to check out some abandoned area where a murder or something heinous happens. Think it’s in Argentina or Spain or some Spanish speaking country,  but I speak Spanish and had English subs.  Atleast i think it was in span.

Really good imho.  Things like the exorcist I laugh right through the whole thing.  Everything on Netflix labeled horror except for “ A dark song” and the “autopsy of Jane doe” are only ok and mostly subpar....but I still like watching them for some reason.  Them other two I mentioned are just good overall horror mystery.  Highly recommended

Let’s just say that it’s a trippy trip to hell, and is a good allegory for nightmare dimensions and hell trips that one can find themselves in while tripping on psychedelics .  Imho!

Same for me on Interstellar. It's my brother-in-law's favorite movie, and when I told him I wasn't into it, he gave me the "well you just don't understand it then".

And yes Jurassic World was bad.

Blind Ass -- yeah I looked it up, I'll definitely have to watch that one

All the recent superhero movies. Pretty much anything from marvel movie wise. I've seen a bunch and thought every single one was pretty bad, but people go crazy for that shit. All the avengers stuff, anything even remotely related to that, etc. etc. I don't ever want to see another one.

I also agree about interstellar being shit. The first matrix was pretty good, but the sequels were some of the worst movies I've ever seen. Filled with terrible lines, awful acting, unbelievably bad plot, seriously some of the worst movies ever.

I guess some people with no taste are now defending the star wars prequels or something but everyone knows those are shit. I think it's really just a troll that people are falling for or something because there's no way anyone could ever think those were any good at all. Also Return of the Jedi was shit, in fact the only good-ish star wars was Empire Strikes Back. And the only good Indiana Jones was the first.

Dude.

:fistbump:

I actually haven't seen any of them. Not one. I'm probably the only guy on earth. So I can't even say if they're bad per se, but I just have no interest at all in the marvel superhero movies.

Damn y'all got a bunch that I feel the same way about. I didn't even finish it (I made it to the 2nd half of the movie though). I actually kinda thought Leo, dare I say it, was very average in that movie, and I thought the special effects weren't very special at all.

Actually the Netflix series Maniac (Emma Stone & Jonah Hill) was a little Inception-ish in the sense that they'd take this trippy drug where they would go into their dreams and memories. Except it was more of a dark trippy drama-comedy whereas Inception was more of an action vehicle.

Most Marvel movies.  The endless idiotic dumb cgi.  I went to a place called Brewvies.  Drank beer and saw a great drama.  The other movie was the Avengers playing there and in a drunken mood thought why not?  I left after 15 minutes in.  And yes I paid the ticket.  I don't theater hop.  Didn't care.

I’m gonna get a lot of hate for this, but fight club and the big lebowski.
I know, I get it. I’m just too dumb to understand  how great these movies are.
I’m not saying they are terrible, but I could easily go the rest of my life without seeing either again, and I wouldn’t lose a wink.
I know that opinion is basically blasphemy, but whatever.

Ahh man, the Dude?  Really?  No flak but guessing you think Quentin Tarantino and his movies suck as well. As well as the Coen Brothers movies like No Country For Old Men.

Flip a coin.  Lol.  Yes you were right about getting flak but like food, music, t.v., media, gaming, everyone makes their own choices in what they like in life which I respect.  To each their own.:chesire:  And yes I watch Alice in Wonderland when fucked up at times, the real one.

I like some the the Tarantino movies. Not the Kill Bill movies, but pretty much all the other movies of his, that I’ve seen, were good. All his more recent films have been top notch. No country for old men is a really good movie. It’s not a movie I rewatch a lot, but I like it a lot. I like raising Arizona and Fargo a lot too. It’s just those 2 specific movies I mentioned. And the hipster mentality a lot of the followers have. If you don’t like it, “you just don’t get it”.
No, I understand the movie. If anything fight club was a little on the nose.
I just didn’t think they were amazing movies.

I respect your opinion as you seem like a film buff.  So if you choose list your top five favorite movies in order.  Would be interested.  Guessing I have seen them alll, just a joke but a watch a lot of movies living in Utah and is quite dangerous to go out to see them here as I bring in alcohol.

Anyway, what are your favorites?  And if you have one independent one, I live near Park City and one I have not heard of that is really good.  Let the people know!  It is entertainment and not real life.  I liked Reservoir Dogs on a next to nothing budget out of all of his and have seen them all.

On a different note am waiting for the theaters to open again.  Not a chance in hell I am paying 20 dollars to watch one at home.

I think Forrest Gump is pretty solid. Kind of has a layer of 90's film cheese to it, but it's a well rounded movie.

A Space Odyssey (1968) - From Bone to Satellite Scene.

I thought, untill the "Bone to Satellite Scene" it was going to be something like exploration of the progress from then, up to the Brigitte Bardot 'One Million Years B.C.' to the present day. Instead it was bollocks.

My brothers took me to see this at the 'pictures' when it came out. I fell asleep shortly after this scene.

I've still never managed to watch the whole film without falling asleep.

I generally like most films, and I watch a lot of them.

Often when I don't like them is when Hollywood thinks that throwing a lot of money at a turd to polish it will make it a great film. There's many $100,000,000 turds out there. As said before super hero and star wars movies, but many of the transformer movies, cliche horror and other mindless drivel that that gets pumped out as well.

Give me a well written and executed b-grade over that inane commercialism any day, geez, give me a crappy b-grade even. At least I'll get a laugh.

I read the book before I watched it, mostly because I had just read The Odyssey by Homer and was curious if they were related. They weren't. Book was decent though. I too fell asleep for the movie and have not finished it.

People are gonna say "What?! No Way!"

Way.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson.

Didn't even watch The Hobbit :nonono:

Mushrooms grow from shit. I love mushrooms, I don't like the shit.

Likwise much of the Fantasy genre grew out of Tolkien's trilogy.

I really wish it hadn't.

I wish Fantasy literature and movies derived from something more wholesome than a take about total race war to the death by an Englishman who grew up in apartheid South Africa.

Neonazis love those books for the same reason I despise them.

The movies stayed true to the theme.

There were no non-white protagonists and tons of non-white antagonists.

Ive been keen to watch the Irishman. What's it like compared to other mob classics?

I agree with Barnaby on chucks p. books. Fight Club book is one of my favorites and so is Choke (which Sam Rockwell played really well in film version)

Napoleon Dynamite. I couldn't watch more than 20min of it. My friends loved it when it came out but i never seen it until last year. Didn't miss much.

It's a tv show but i couldn't get into Animal Kingdom. Tried to. Friend said it gets better but few episodes in i wasn't going to waste anymore time.

Extremely slow, and extremely long. I think it clocks in at close to 4 hrs. And I don't mind a slow burn at all, but The Irishman is even on another level of slow. It's still a Martin Scorcese film so it's elite quality film making for sure.

As far as what it compares to -- I'm really not sure. It's nothing like any of the usual mob classics. It's basically a portrayal of real life Frank Sheeran (now dead), who claimed to be Jimmy Hoffa's right hand man, and also claimed to know how he died (I won't spoil that part for you). There's also a pretty incredible claim as to who was truly responsible for the JFK assassination as well.

Here’s a new one:

Knives out.

Everyone who saw it thought it was great or compared it to Clue.

Didn’t like it, hated it in fact (it was shit and medically false). Clue kicks ass.

I liked and still like fight club. I liked the original matrix in 99. I think it aged a little. Fuck the 2 sequels.

Did not like interstellar.. didn’t hate it but same fucking reaction from everyone that beats off to it... you must not understand it.

I don’t like any film with Ann Hathaway actually. I don’t have a sister but I feel like watching her is like watching my sister in a movie if I had one. She is not sexy. When she tries to play sexy I vomit in my mouth.

Sorry Ann. I know your probably creeping on the shroomery. Your just not my cup of tea.

Womb Raider.

Not much of a plot if you ask me.

...and...

Any Movies or shows with incredibly obvious and transparently forced feminism, they make me cringe worse than those mid 90s era Hollywood blockbuster films where patriarchal man-splaining to the beautiful damsel in distress trope was half of every movie.

There's one genuinely good feminist movie I've seen lately, and that's Blow The Man Down.

It doesn't have an agenda. It's just a group of well written, interesting characters in a well written, well directed, well acted movie. And it happens to be centered around women.

I'm actually shocked you're applying modern race politics to The Lord of the Rings Asante. That's some funny shit man. People see connections where they want to see them though.

Movies were okay imho. Not polished turds.

Right?  PC much to much.

I love all of Tolkien’s works so much that I don’t see straight when it comes to the movies, but I thought they were done as well as could be expected, and that’s pretty good by movie standards for adaptions from novels.

Lawd yes. People should stick this crap up their asses and make entertainment already, stop trying to win awards from Hollywood critics.

"Women can do everything and white men are evil" plots are a drag, can't watch that crap. Especially when it's super obvious that the actresses couldn't really do what they are doing in the film. Oh, but it's entertainment.... Then why are the fucking socio-political narratives more important than the plot then?  :crankey:. Entertainment or agenda based propaganda, I don't think they can actually tell the difference.

I think buying into the idea that neonazi's like it for the reasons you don't might have more to do with you buying into the neo-nazi interpretation of the story than anything the author intended himself.

At the end of the day, it's a story about multiple races coming together despite their differences to defeat an angelic force that wanted to seize control of everything they shared in common with each other. There were a "monster" kind of enemy army raised to give a nod to folklore and mythology, I think it's a stretch to believe it was in anyway intended to depict a racial stereotype, especially when his own account is that it was more a reflection of WW1 which he fought in.

http://www.openculture.com/2014/04/j-r-r-tolkien-snubs-a-german-publisher.html

Quote:

His first novel The Hobbit, predecessor to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, first appeared in 1937, a time when the situation in Europe had turned ominous indeed, and would get far uglier still. It didn't take long after the book's initial success for Berlin publisher Rütten & Loening to express their interest in putting out a German edition, but first — in observance, no doubt, of the Third Reich's dictates — they asked for proof of Tolkien's "Aryan descent." The author drafted two replies, the less civil of which reads as follows:

25 July 1938
20 Northmoor Road, Oxford

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter. I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people. My great-great-grandfather came to England in the eighteenth century from Germany: the main part of my descent is therefore purely English, and I am an English subject — which should be sufficient. I have been accustomed, nonetheless, to regard my German name with pride, and continued to do so throughout the period of the late regrettable war, in which I served in the English army. I cannot, however, forbear to comment that if impertinent and irrelevant inquiries of this sort are to become the rule in matters of literature, then the time is not far distant when a German name will no longer be a source of pride.

Your enquiry is doubtless made in order to comply with the laws of your own country, but that this should be held to apply to the subjects of another state would be improper, even if it had (as it has not) any bearing whatsoever on the merits of my work or its sustainability for publication, of which you appear to have satisfied yourselves without reference to my Abstammung.

I trust you will find this reply satisfactory, and

remain yours faithfully,

J. R. R. Tolkien
