PF jar fruiting "early"
    #26619287 - 04/22/20 04:38 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I have a jar that's about 80% colonized, but it's already started fruiting in some spots. I say "early" in quotes because it's actually been colonizing for nearly 60 days. I think if I leave it it will finish eventually. Should I let it finish, or birth it now and wash off the uncolonized substrate? I kinda prefer birthing it now if it doesn't pose any risk to the other cakes.

There's probably some bacteria in there. Birth now and wash off the uncolonized sub.

Sounds like your cakes stalled out. Some pics will help assess the issue.

As mentioned, birth now and remove the uncolonized parts then dunk for 24hrs.

For sure it's bacteria. I've had issues with those little bastards in all my jars, which why I'm moving to agar and grains.

The uncolonized bit looks large but it's something about the lighting or the perspective I can't seem to fix. It's only about the size of two fingertips.

PS: I know I'll have to break the jar.

Looks like u made your substrate too wet, hence the stalling.

Hmm... On that occasion I followed the tek to the letter. 2:1:1 verm-water-BRF. The thing is, Ive tried lowering the water content in 9% decrements and it worked even worse.

Well, whatever. It's the last batch anyway. Thanks, I'm going to birth it now.

oohhhh that’s nayu-sty ; )  hopefully you get a little something though if it’s already pinning in the ja.

What type of verm were you using? That substrate ratio always worked real well for me with fine verm.

Try 2/3 cup Verm, 1/4 cup water then add 1/4 cup BRF, and then mix altogether. Its what I use and the mixture comes out perfectly every time

I thought it was never going to finish, so if it produces anything at all it ain't too bad. :-)

I used medium-grain, which was all I could find. I really think it doesn't hold water all that well.

That would be 200:75:75. I tried 200:75:100 and the mycelium in most of the jars basically dried out.
