Shouldn't rip them out like that keep the "roots" in the ground you destroyed that patch

I also thought another good rule is to only pick 30% of the patch so that it remains viable. Sometimes when I pick shrooms they don't always reshoot that season. Picking all the available shrooms would limit spore dispersal

this is not necessarily true.  research has been done to show that there are benefits to both aspects, but the fact that gently pulling does help promote the mycelium seems like a plus to me.

Yeah I try to only find the quite mature ones, but.im wondering if I should leave pins when that look like they are going to dry out or pick them?

There are thousands if not Millions of spores released.

Sometimes a patch only has enough nutrients for one good flush.  I haven't heard the 30% rule before.  I would suggest picking them all carefully, and leaving the pins.

Agreed, I was referring more to the inordinate amount of pins that appear to have been picked in that haul.

Well a pin that ain't gonna fruit ain't gonna release spores, so I don't see why not.

It's not a rule in any official capacity, just one I was going to follow to avoid killing patches. I heard that mushrooms that release spores will keep fruiting, so picking them will terminate that process. I figured leaving some behind so they can keep dropping spores would be a good rule to increase reproductive resilience of the mushrooms. 30% is just a number I landed on when thinking how much to leave behind to ensure resilience, but you could experiment and come up with a more accurate percentage.

A patch will continue to fruit based on available nutrients in the substrate, not about whether spores have been released.  Given that Psilocybin is only produced to deter insects Psilocybe have a good ratio of mushrooms that reach maturity to sporulate.

Mushrooms continue to release spores after being picked.

And it has been demonstrated that a heavy spore load can inhibit spore germination and mycelial growth.

given how weedy Psilocybe subaeruginosa is, and how aggressively they grow, once a few have fruited and sporulated in a patch I probably wouldn't be overly worried.

Things seem to be drying up a bit but they're still around.
Psilocybe subaeruginosa;

Also am starting to see some edibles spring up;
Lactarius deliciosus;

Suillus luteus;

Hey Guys

I was wondering a few things,
How many days does it take usually for P. subs to pop up after some good rain, and do they prefer to grow around eucalypts or are most native trees usually good?

Cheers

Word of warning for those picking subs: I’ve found two decent patches this season. Unfortunately even a small dose from the first and best patch has given me terrible wood lovers paralysis. If you aren’t familiar, it’s a side effect of unknown origin that causes severe muscle paralysis. I grew up in a place where we mostly got cubes and I was unfamiliar with this issue.

Long story short, my legs collapsed from under me and I twisted my knee pretty bad. I also had facial paralysis and was unable to move my tongue around my mouth. It was NOT a pleasant experience. I thought I might have been having a stroke until I did some reading.

Most of the very sparse research seems to be that it has something to do with the substrate. I will try to ID the woodchips from the “tainted” patch and see if there are any threads here that can further the discussion.

As always, make sure you are with a responsible trip sitter, particularly when dosing subs from a new patch. Apparently not everyone gets this symptom, and I hope it’s relatively rare. It was almost enough to put me off for good.  Almost. :smile:

Stay safe and good luck!

Seconding this question! As a newbie I'm really not sure when to search other than after a good night of rain and low temps, I scoured a bunch of eucalyptus in town and found nothing! :frown:

Typically its best to hit eucalypts in the hills/native areas. This is because all the bark, leaves, branches fall down and decompose in the soil. Not saying you cant find such areas in the city. The best type of habitat to aim for in the city is woodchip landscaped gardens.

The best places to look are anywhere that gets mulched but not too often. I’ve found them in a fast food parking lot, a business park, and in local reserve areas. Southern-facing slopes in shade or near water can be good.

Subs can be hard to spot, so keep an eye out for those little orange buggers that grow in mulch.  I can’t remember the name but I will take some photos next time I’m out. They tend to like the same environment and you can usually spot them at a distance. If you see those orange ones, look around for subs in the same spot.

Always make sure they bruise blue. If in doubt, put a cap on some white paper and look for the rusty-purple spore print. Lots of friendly people to help you ID, just start a new thread.

Good luck!

Cool!! Thanks so much everyone! There's heaps of those little orange dudes in the native planted wetlands I explore, so I'll keep checking there now and then to see if subs pop up too, I'm determined to say I've at least found SOMETHING!! I'll keep you all updated on baby's first subs finding adventure!

Jesus christ. Glad you are doing alright now mate. Never even heard of this before. I normally go to the same patches anyway. But still. This sounds terrifying.

I haven't had much luck finding anything yet, my area is still pretty sparse for any mushrooms, and the weather has warmed up again. But normally early May seems to be the best time for me.
