Questions About Cacti Growing
    #26617773 - 04/21/20 01:13 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Okay, well, I am in the middle of my first shrooms grow, even though originally I had first considered Mescalin cacti, like San Pedro or the cacti with peyote buttons. I found the times of growth...well, discouraging to say the least, which is why I went with shrooms. I guess it was more attractive to me to grow quicker, rather than waiting years for a serviceable yield. By that I mean that it seems to take a very long time before one should "cut pieces" off their cacti to trip on, lest we consume our plants too quickly, basically paying all that money for clippings to trip on.

But something has been on my mind lately regarding cacti:

Is there a compromise somewhere between some form of sooner yields and waiting years for anything that you can eat without gobbling up huge  parts of your cactus? Meaning, say instead of buying clipping, doing what has to be done to "plant" them, then waiting patiently for years, what about buying a whole, HUGE cactus, and doing both? I'm talking about buying a cactus or cacti large enough to both let it grow bigger AND also being able to indulge in a few months rather than years?

Thoughts?

A cutting can be planted, or consumed directly. Or you split in in two parts, plant one half and consume the other half.

Cuttings are available in many sizes. Usually a cutting is about a foot long, but they are sold in sizes up to three feet or more, too. Plenty to trip and plant.

A planted cutting should sproud new pups within a season. These pups might grow a foot per year when grown in good environments.

Cacti grown from seeds take like half a decade to be ready to harvest.

This is great news, thanks!

I was looking at the site sponsor page and could only find two sites that sell cuttings, all of very small sizes. Unless I'm missing something, unfortunately if I go this route, I may have to seek non-sponsor sites that sell larger samples. I found a site that I won't post here for obvious reasons that sell packages with pieces ranging from a couple of inches to a foot. I think one package deal they had was 5 pounds of assorted sizes from 3" to 12" for about $55.00 USD. Not a bad price, but if I end up doing this, assuming you can even grow these cacti indoors in an area like NY City, I would want to start with much larger cuttings if possible.

I know nothing about San Pedro, but my gut instincts tell me that 3 foot pieces would be a much better starting point. I would assume that if you start with really big pieces, then they would grow faster? Seems like starting out with full size or close to full size cactus samples would at least have the virtue of giving someone a bit of a head start?
