Sometimes It Rains (no decrim initiative on the CA 2020 ballot)
    #26618432 - 04/21/20 06:32 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Original is copied from info@decrimca.org's email, so no reference URL.  But of course it's way cool to donate money or buy  a T-shirt from them.

Hello Troublemakers,

I keep thinking about this great scene in the baseball film Bull Durham where Tim Robbins is giving an interview to a reporter and it goes like this: A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains."

Today was the deadline to submit 623,212 valid signatures to the state of California to qualify for the November 2020 ballot and we never made it even close to that count because of COVID-19.

As of yet we have not received a single indication that the California government will allow for an extension or electronic signatures.

In other words today it rained.

So here is the path going forward:

Decriminalize California will keep running the campaign and will file again for the next election cycle.

We will also open up the initiative language v 4.4 for some additional edits and tweaks now that we have more time on our hands.

The Initiative Alliance consisting of our initiative and the four other initiatives that didn't make the cut are now looking into a legal path to push the state of California into allowing electronic signatures.

We are also reaching out to all the other state initiatives around the union that also got paused mid signature collection to see if they would be interested in forming a national movement for electronic signatures for both initiatives, referendums, recalls, and voting.

For every state that passes electronic voting it will remove one more barrier between the people and their government, meaning the cost to push any future initiatives will be far cheaper.

I will be working on both campaigns for the next 2+ years and will sync up volunteers to work collectively.

As far as schedules Decriminalize California will run the next signature collection stage after the following three criteria have been met:

    1. After the November 2020 elections so we don't get drowned out in all the political white noise.
    2. After California officially lifts the quarantine and people come back outside, that could be two to three months later.
    3. The US Postal Service is still funded and active, currently they are running out of money.

That last bit about the USPS is key but I'll save that bit for the next DecrimCA Volunteer Strategy meeting happening tomorrow night from 8-9 PST.

Finally to all the volunteers, you are some of the craziest, coolest, most brilliant people I have ever met and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for going this far on the journey with me and I hope you have enough energy for the next wave because it's going to be a big one.

And if you haven't seen Bull Durham now's a good time.

Peace,
-Ryan Munevar  ryan@decrimca.org

P.S. IF any of you would like to help on the Vote Electronic campaign hit me up and I will get you dialed in.

thats a shame. The mushroom therapy petition in oregon is only like 13k signatures short. I swear if this virus was a week later they woulda made it.
