How flushes work?

About how many flushes are shoeboxes good for? Does it know or can detect when to start the second flush, for instance after the first flush has matured? After the first flush has matured and then been harvested does it know to produce the next flush? Or can multiple flushes just happen at one time and then after that there is none? For example, could your second flush be happening at the same time as your first flush, but just a little bit behind it at different stages? Because then how do you know how many different flushes can you get it from it? You could go along and rehydrate your sub and tub waiting for a brand new flush thinking the next one is coming and nothing happens because you already had two flushes going at the same time. Is that possible? Or will the next flush only happen after the first one has matured?

Number of flushes depends on allot of different factors. Just keep going till you get noticable signs of contams. After you have harvested, simply flood your substrate with fresh water and soak it overnight then drain out excess water in the morn. New pins should show up within 5 days most of the time.
Sorry let me just add flushes dont mature at the same rate. You may have new pins coming in towards the end of your first harvest. It's still ok to soak them just dont disturb them.

Flushing is a response to an environmental stress. Evaporation of the substrate or a contamination.
Mushrooms are not programed to flush 4 times and give up the ghost. After the first flush from the evaporation trigger they will start to recolonize any unharvested mushrooms or media and then when you introduce the next environmental stress point. Evaporation, they will flush again. So they will keep producing until the substrate has been completely digested and there is no more energy, but usually you see a competitor contamination take hold before that.

Question from a passerby trying to gather informations : I was trying to see how to transition from the first flush to the second one. I've harvested my shrooms, quite content at that, I use a growkit for now but I was wondering if I should remove the smaller pins before soaking the substrate or just let them be as they could kick in later.
I lost myself in the numerous tutos but couldn't find the detailed answer, if anybody has it I'll gladly take it

No need to remove pins unless they are aborted (turned blue or black and deteriorating). Even then you don't need to remove them. There is no real "how to transition" method or tek except that hydrating the substrate is recommended and a good way to do that is bottom watering over night or for a couple hours like mentioned here before.

Thank you, I knew about watering, just didn't know what to do with pins. I won't make the mistake of removing them now.
