Is this sawdust spawn still viable?
    #26616882 - 04/21/20 06:10 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hello shroomerites,

longtime lurker here. I hope ye are keeping well during these exceedingly strange days.
I have learned a lot from reading these forums over the years and keep returning when I have the time and resources to persue this fascinating hobby. This is one of those times.

I have a question regarding the viability of some sawdust spawn I just received in the post.
I ordered it over a month ago and due to the lockdown restrictions, shipping services between mainland Europe and the island I reside on were curtailed. I didn't think it would arrive at all but  surprise surprise, this morning part of the order landed on my doorstep. It contained a two bags of sawdust spawn, one of Pleurotus Ostreatus and one of Trametes Versicolour.

There are patches of light yellow on the mycelium in both bags, and there was a bit of yellow mycelium piss liquid in both as well, not sure if they are attempting to fruit in the bag and if they are still viable for the purpose of inoculating logs. The bags spent 3 weeks in transit, presumably not in refrigerated conditions but were made up fresh before shipping. I don't have much experience with sawdust spawn/edible species.

I've used the search function but could not glean an answer in this case.

Can you guys tell me if this spawn still looks good to use?

many thanks,

pharmer jim

oyster and turkey tail.. they are probably fine. both are resilient fungi  and should be able to out run competitors especially on logs.

if you want to know exactly how viable they are you could use a small piece to inoculate an agar plate.

I agree the fungus of those species should still be viable and quite alive.

The problem is going to be how useful it is as spawn...  When it's that consolidated it's going to be difficult to break it up into smaller pieces for lots of inoculation points.  I feel like no matter how good you mash that up you're going to end up with a lot of larger, stuck together chunks.

I imagine it will still work though, they're both pretty aggressive - just obviously not ideal.

Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them?  Try this double extraction method.

Thanks for the replies guys, we'll give them a go and see how we get on, hope for the best.
May be able to grate up the lumpy bits for more surface area.. Agar plate is a good idea. At the moment I've nothing going in the way of a lab, but if I had I'd definitely give that a go out of curiosity.

I had a look at the double extraction in your sig Forrester, good write up, I'll definitely be trying that at some stage with some turkey tail.
