Shroomhunts said: @relic I propose a test to settle this once and for all, next time I see some voids groing on a blue log I will test it with reagent for psilocybin. Or maybe I will just eat the wood too see if I trip. No but really tho you have been doing this longer than I, and I am still learning more every time I go hunting. That is why I love hunting psychedelic mushrooms, It is something that is not well understood by modern science and It gives us the chance to constantly learn. Mycelium can have similar smells however I have a firm belief ovoid myc has a distinct smell that is unique. I strongly reccomend smelling every mushroom you encounter, god gave you the nose so why not use it
How wild was it that this came up and then I found a perfect example the next day? Coincidences; super interesting sometimes.
I totally dont mean to come off as some self-proclaimed expert beause that definitely isn't the case. I have just seen a lot, especially because I have patches in my yard. Experimentation and close daily observation of home patches coupled with time in the field has taught me so much. I feel strongly that some blue staining is damaged myc that contained enough alkaloid to create staining, but I dont mean to portray that as 100% certainty.
And, of course, even blue stained wood right next to a growing ovoid still doesnt mean a 100% chance the staining is ovoid mycelium in the wood without further testing.
I bet some staining could be reagent tested successfully by the average person but I doubt there is enough alkaloid content in some pieces to give an accurate result. And, once again, that is outside my knowledge base so
Definitely make a thread if you do test some wood; thats a great idea to try reagent testing. What kit(s) do you have?. Would be especially interesting to test wood that has ovoid fruit bodies on it.
I'll drop the topic now so we can get back to observations. Good discussion, though.

That photo belongs here. Those are ovoids.
DonJohnson, and Koods were right (of course). I went back today, gave these some extra time (an hour!), and now I'm seeing clear blueing around the edges of the cap.
Thanks guys! The first find for me was 3+ weeks sooner than in 2019. Crazy!

I was pretty sure they were ovoids too; glad you went back! They didn't resemble agrocybes to me at all

Peekaboo.

This celandine is hiding a lot of good stuff. I got lucky and saw a little glimpse of a cap. Once I got into the weeds there were a dozen more. All really big. The celandine is starting to die back in places

Another newb with a first find. Right as I was about to give up after seeing countless dryads and some pluteus and (I think) galerina. Then I saw something glow on the edge of mulched trail. These things are turning impressively blue!

Im not even really sure how to harvest them because they have taken over an area the size of a football feild. Cant walk through without crushing some. Probably gonna make little trails in a grid pattern or maybe put stepping stones not sure yet. I stepped on a pin that was thicker than my thumb... god only knows how big it could have gotten.
I started off this season a bit depressed because I cant get too some of my spots, and some even got bulldozed do to new construction but this shit made the season for me. I looked here past 3 years with no luck and all the sudden a whole field of them pops up, makes you wonder...

I Dry My Mushrooms For About 8 Hrs, So They Are Near Cracker Dry. Then I Put Them In Front Of A Fan For 4 Hrs While The Dehydrator Cools. Then I Return Them To The Dehydrator For Another 4 Hrs Until They Are Completely Cracker Dry. Works Every Time.
