Can boil over cause contamination?
    #26615995 - 04/20/20 06:25 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I just melted some sterilized MEA in the microwave but I looked away for a second and it boiled over a little and ran down the side of my media bottle. Is alright to pour or do you think it wicked contamination all the way up to the no drip ring?

The microwave alone isn't enough to sterilize agar I don't think anyhow.

It will still be ok to pour into plates and then pressure cook to make

sterile.

I did it yesterday but i do it to thaw out my agar from the freezer i have ready to go. I made sure it didn't mess up the consistency by pouring a plate and letting it solidify and it was fine so i used it. Your gonna wanna PC the agar.

I already sterilized the agar in my pc but I let it solidify before I poured the plates. I microwaved the media bottle with the cap loose to re-melt it but I accidentally let it boil over and some agar went down the side of the bottle.

I can't imagine how a microorganism would travel that far that fast. Plus, while it was boiling over, material was moving away from the inside of the bottle. It it was me I would not worry about it at all.

Depends on how valuable your time is. If time is short then redo to ensure its done right. Just my philosophy.
