How do I make a mushroom brick from ganoderma sp?
    #26615566 - 04/20/20 02:31 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

My spouse would like to work on an art project involved in building a structure from mushrooms. There are many articles and startups working on this, including MycoWorks.

https://m5.paperblog.com/i/31/312846/mushroom-building-bricks-that-are-stronger-th-L-xj6Gry.jpeg

From what I can tell, it looks like makers are spawning to bulk within some sort of form to create the shape. I've read sawdust or pistachio shells are common bulk substrates.

I've also read that in some cases, the bricks are made stronger by the application of pressure and/or drying the colonized forms out.

Has anyone made bricks from ganoderma sp before? I'd like to know more about:

* What should I use for bulk substrate?
* What are some tips for brick forming?
* Is drying or applying pressure required? If so, how might DIYer do this? (MycoWorks uses a commercial hydraulic press)

Thanks.

I've though about this and played with it a little, here's my thoughts:

- I would use fuel pellets as substrate.  All you have to do is pour boiling water on top of them (Lipa's fuel pellet tek) and wait to cool.

- Then like you said, inoculate with spawn and fill whatever form you like.  The reishi substrate will easily take the form of whatever you put it into, like bricks, or here's a bucket:

- I would say you probably don't need pressure or anything.  But I would dry them.  Once you dry out a reishi substrate it turns hard as a ROCK.  You'll see.

If you wanna get even more artsy, you can leave space inside some things and the mushroom will conform to the shape.  These grew inside soda bottles then I cut them open, that's how the mushrooms got the cool shape:

Let us know how it goes!

Super helpful.

Is it necessary to place any kind of liner between the form and substrate or will it just naturally separate once it's pretty colonized?

Also, do these things rot eventually? If I wanted to build a structure from ganoderma bricks for an indoor art exhibit, would I need to worry about smell or rot eventually ruining the whole thing?

Lipa's fuel pellet tek with grow logs.

Liner, good question... I guess it depends on what material your mold is made of.  I have had bits of substrate stick inside monotubs when I've popped the sub out of them, it can kind of cling on.  Smaller ones usually pop out if the plastic is smooth enough.

Just run a test before you make like 1000 of them

As far as rot, I think it will mostly depend on how dry it remains.  I don't think smell will be an issue at all, even after fruiting reishi seems to still fight off bacteria.  They never get all soft and squishy and stink like other used substrates...
Surface mold could be an issue, but if you keep it dry and in open air I'm guessing you can avoid that.

 All makes sense. Just threw some ganoderma on a plate, hoping to get my first brick done in the coming weeks. Will drop a pic here when I'm farther along.

Check out the posts from casualgrower.  He did some impressive art projects.  Unfortunately his last post is 1 year and 5 months old.  But you should learn a lot from reading all the discussions of his posts.
