How to use Facebook anonymously
    #26615526 - 04/20/20 02:19 PM (4 years, 29 days ago)

Is there a way to sign up and use Facebook without giving up ones personal identity? As a general protest to the egregious privacy violations and practices by big tech, I've been gradually phasing out my usage of all social media and G for search.

However, there are many awesome groups and people that I'd like to interact with that are only available in Facebook groups. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for ways I can use Facebook without giving them enough data that they can connect me to my real identity.

Happy to answer more clarifying questions around what I'm comfortable sharing or not to work out a viable solution. Thanks friends.

I'd imagine it's very tricky indeed, especially if you've had a legit profile.  They will be able to "fingerprint" you based on many factors, so any new profile you have will have to be sufficiently different to your old profile to not link them.

Identifying factors include:
Your OS/Browser
Browser Plugins
Screen resolution
Websites visited
Friends lists
Groups
Hobbies and interests
People searches on FB
IP Address
Location
Browsing patterns
Tracking cookies

Have a look at https://amiunique.org/ for an insight.  It turns out just from visiting that website they can identify me from the 2 000 000 other visitors they've fingerprinted.

You'll want to use tor (slow) or a VPN, and a browser that is designed for privacy.  Use that vpn/browser combo to sign up for an email address and use that address to make the Facebook account.    Be careful to never access the account from your normal browser.

Unless you are doing child porn on Facebook though, you probably don't need to do this.

Damn, I wonder how they did that!  Could have been browser fingerprinting or a cookie.  Try a using a browser that is designed for privacy, which will take care of both of those issues.

Having worked extensively as an engineer in bigtech and fintech for years, I can tell you there about two dozen companies that are aggregating enormous amounts of personal and financial data on everyone and companies like FB and Google gobble it up like hotcakes.

Snowden warned of this and has been especially critical of bigtech because they're also funneling all to the government through the internet backbones connecting all of these massive networks.

Facebook is constructed such that it aggregates exactly the kind of data that can connect all of the disparate data sources. Furthermore, the contract with these data providers often requires that the subscriber report back any new or supplemental data so the system feeds itself.

I've been protesting the violation of big techs privacy and data harvesting by gradually weening myself off them over the years, but that is becoming increasingly difficult - especially when I see folks like @Alan and many other cool groups use FB so extensively for stuff I'm interested in.

Perhaps the only option left is to fire up a Tails image and browse FB through Tor with a completely made up identity; however, that is both cumbersome and prevents me from, as an example, building a relationship with Alan because he doesn't know who I really am.

I had hoped that blockchain would have made a private distributed internet possible but it doesn't look like it's gaining any ground. I know Tim Berner's Lee (inventor of WWW) is also working on something but is efforts have also failed.

Why does it matter if they collect all of this info?
Subversive information warfare. Your data is being used to manipulate search results, advertising, product offers and everything in between for monetary, political and social control - all without you knowing.

That strikes me as the opposite of a free society.

Other than that, how's y'all days going?

Yea I typically use duck duck go but it's probably the phone app. FB and Google are some of the worst for privacy.

FB definitely tracks people, though it seems to be used for targeting advertising instead of the types of stuff we would typically worry about.  These days all of my ads are for microscopes and cameras, while 5 years ago it was a lot of gay dating sites and luxury cruises.  So I am not particularly paranoid about being tracked, though that could change as new information comes in.

Man, I wish that were true but it's not. The list of infringements and misuse of your data is growing by the minute and it extends well beyond targeted advertising.

I started to write up this long thing and then I realized, most of the stuff I wanted to mention was already being accumulated here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Facebook#Privacy_issues

Side note, this is a useful site to learn which of your emails and accounts have already been hacked:

You can't use Facebook anonymously, pretty much by virtue of it being a social media platform where you have to register an account.  Accessing it through Tor might hide your location but you're still probably going to have to enable features that are basically designed to track your activity (on their end anyway), you're still logging into your profile and there are also human factors aside from that which can allow people to identify you.

Just because someone has an onion site, doesn't mean it's any more secure. If anything, using the tor version of Facebook will only augment the data provided to FB to fingerprint users.

Not to mention the fact that you'd have to send your login credentials over Tor, which is way sketchier for you then just logging in over regular old clearnet.

Hi PTreeDish

Thanks for taking the time to make that detailed response.

I can totally relate & appreciate the inside info you have shared.

While I don't have anything to hide that would be of much interest to 'the authorities' I nonetheless, out of principle, abhor the invasion of privacy & harvesting of personal info that is so rife in the digital age.

The dilemma of 'weaning off' social media etc is a common one, with (to my knowledge) no practical solution if we wish to remain connected with our online communities + access interesting/valuable content from thought-leaders etc.

Bring on the blockchain web &/or social media apps!

Bless
:thanx:

i have an account that i set up with fake details (obviously). when they finally got suspicious of the account they locked it and asked me to send proof of ID. i threw together a quite obviously fake ID and utility bill using images i found online, changing the details to match the profile.

they accepted that and unlocked my profile. i still use it now years later with no problems. now when it gets flagged as fake by other users they ignore it because i have proven my ID.

as well as all that you need to make sure you hide your identity. you can use a VPN and/or tor browser (there is an onion version of FB) to hide your IP and you can spoof your mac address just to be on the safe side.

make sure you deny all cookies from everything that you do not 100% trust and be aware that things you do on non-FB sites will get back to FB anyway. they are not a social media company, they are a data company, and all those data companies share our information with each other. so its best to keep your habits up at all times, not only when you are using FB.

all those things technically help protect your identity, but there are a lot of things people can do to build a profile and pin you like that. e.g. your chats (obviously they can see them), your network, your likes etc.
it is important to not be yourself on FB, and the web in general. but on FB do not add people you know irl and do not follow bands you actually like etc.
i like to throw red herrings in and like things i know nothing about, add random people etc.

good luck
