Wbs beginner,, Rye pro...

So I’ve been using rye berries for the past couple years. Prep is super easy. I love rye. I usually get mine from amazon but the 10 pound bag I usually get has been sold out for a couple months. I can’t find rye berries anywhere in my town. So I decided to try out wbs. It’s a bitch to prep. I followed Franks wbs prep two times now. I think maybe the temp in my pc was too high because my jars come out with almost every grain burst and they’re dark brown. Can anyone tell from these pics if I should use these or try again. Well obviously I’m gonna try again but should I noc these up or no?
If I can manage to get my wbs prep down I could simply walk across the street and buy a new bag of wbs anytime,, it’s much cheaper than rye and I don’t have to wait on delivery. Any advice is greatly appreciated. ✌️

I’ve only used wbs and prep can vary huge between brands for some reason.
I cold soak and found 24 hours to be too long sometimes. I normally go 16-20, strain them out for 15 mins then load them up.
I was using an instant pot up until recently when I switched to a presto23.
They come out way different than I’m used to. Like you said they look super dark and mine were clumped up. I thought something went wrong at first but if you shake them up when you take them out and maybe again 12-24 hours later they’ll go back to normal looking.

I really like FOOMAN’S WBS method. I just used it for the first time, so I can’t say how well it will colonize or anything yet. But the moisture content and everything looks really good. It seemed halfway dry after the PC but after a shake and 20 minutes everything evened out.
The only thing I did different then his write up was to rinse the seed before doing the boil and soak I’m all fours do you want to drive fucking 25 miles an hour because there’s a cop fucking speed limit is like whatever the fuck it is 45

Still new so this is the only way I have prepped wbs. I did a no-soak method and it seemed to be pretty good. I dont remember what it was called but basically you bring the water to a boil, dump in the wbs, turn the heat off, let it sit for about 25 minutes, dry for a bit in a strainer, load jars, then pc. The grains were wet when loading in the jars and were still wet looking for a day or two after pcing but then that moisture was absorbed.
I did one batch with the sunflower seeds I and one with out them. The one with seeds in had two jars contaminate; one before and one after inoculation. The ones with no sunflower seeds have been good so far.
Hope this helps.

Domino that is the Fooman method you’re talking about. It’s a pretty sweet and easy way to do it.

Fooman wbs
This is a great tek for WBS
I just add a few rinses (more like franks) to get Most of the floaters out before straining it.

using fooman’s method,, when it comes to rinsing the grains after they soak for 20 min in the boiled water do you use cold, warm, or hot water to rinse them with??

prep definitely varies between brands, so each takes a bit of dialing in. (I use franks)
I've sometimes had results with really dark grains after pc that still look wet, with some burst. I think it's still useable. Only, before inoculating, shake it really well a couple times over the next few days, until a lot of the moisture is absorbed/dispersed and the color isn't so dark. They'll begin to look like 'normal' prepped wbs, and should colonize nicely.

I use hot tap water, so they will still steam dry.

Cool beans.. I’m not as worried about the moisture as I am how many grains have burst and how dark they look. I’m wanting to try Fooman’s method now...as soon as I get home from work

As long as there isn’t cracked corn in your wbs sticky grains are not an issue with foos tek IMO.

Doesn't matter. People confuse it with other teks & think you need to wait for the moisture to evaporate completely off the grains or dry them with a paper towel after the rinse- YOU DONT. Let the grains steep 30min-1hr. Rinse well with water in the strainer (water temp doesn't matter) I prefer metal mesh strainers. Let drain until the strainer stops dripping then fill your jars. Doesn't matter if the grains are wet. That extra moisture cooks into the wbs when you PC it. Easy peasy & I still haven't changed the way I do it to this day.
