What psi to vent pc at?

I have a presto 23 quart that I’m using with an outdoor propane burner. The manual says heat on high until you see a steady supply of steam leaving the vent and then adjust down as needed to keep the steam steady. The psi gauge can go anywhere between 0 and 5 with the pressure regulator off and I’m having a hard time finding the right psi to get it to vent steam consistently. It usually ends up with me venting for like an hour trying to get the steam consistent and plopping the regulator on and finishing the cycle out of frustration. I’m at about 2000 ft if that matters.

I had a similar question. I’m using the same presto 23 and when venting I can hear the water boiling hard and there’ll be a steady spout of steam for like 5-10 seconds then it’ll start sputtering for 10-20 seconds before going steady again.
I let it go like this for a while waiting for it to stay steady but it never does.
Is that normal??
I pc for two hours and haven’t really had problems.
Also op during venting I don’t think psi matters cuz you’ve got the weight off.

I use a gallon of water. I leave the weight off until the vent pops up, then put it on. After it gets to 15psi I turn the heat down so that it still jiggles, but not constantly. Leave the weight on until the vent drops back into the lid.

I’ve noticed a steadier fuller stream of steam when the gauge reads at around 4 and a half psi but it still sputters. I used to use a glass top induction stove for it (I have the induction model) and it always gave me bacterial contamination on my plates. It didn’t seem to put off as much steam as the propane burner when boiling water without the lid on either so I don’t know if that had something to with it.

So it’s okay to vent for 15 minutes at 0psi as long as the lock pops up first? Sorry for the dumb questions I’m just having contamination issues and I’m trying to rule every possible vector.

Mine never goes above 0 before I put the weight on. I just let it vent for 10 minutes after the lock comes up.

pfTEC9 said: My 23q Presto is the same way. I read a book (written in the 70s) that said a "thick head of steam" was very important, but mine never lets out a "thick" stream of steam. So long as the locking lug is in the up position then I am confident that there is enough steam in the PC. After the locking lug gets itself raised and locked then I start looking at the steam valve. I'll watch it for about 15 minutes to get a feel for its progress, then I let it vent for another 10 minutes or more before adding the weight. Its not a strong 'Thomas the Tank Engine' flow of steam, but it works for me.
Venting the PC for at least 10 minutes is very important. But, like you, I dont get that fat thick stream of vapor coming out.
I would not vent for an hour, and I am shocked to hear that your gauge reads 5PSI without the jiggleweight on the unit. May be normal tho
I guess I’ll try a run venting at 0psi for 15 minutes after the lock pops up. It’s the little details that’ll get you with this hobby, but I’ll get it eventually lol.

cronicr is corrext.
Keep off the weight, put burner on high (it may say 2 psi or soemthing) but there on this PC (I also own one) it has a little circular valve. When that little vavle pops up, thats when you start your venting time 10 - 15 minutes then put weight on

Is that the little button-looking valve on the handle?

On the presto it’s built in. Mines a little silver button looking thing that pops up like half an inch.

Be careful using that outdoor propane burner. I’ve seen some pictures of bulged out prestos. Though if you’ve already been rolling with it you’re probably alright. Less than 12k btu or whatever.
I wonder if the altitude affects the steam somehow? Mine I just put near high and after 10-15 minutes it’s steady steam coming out. I don’t think it needs to be a crazy thick steam just constant with no air sputters. Do you tip your jars to let any air bubbles out from underneath?

Huh. Does propane make it bulge out? I thought it was from running it dry....

I think the issue with using propane burners with high BTUs can soften the bottom metal. I know running it dry can make it bow but I’m sure softening the metal could probably exacerbate the problem.

Yeah sputtering is the air venting. When I get full steam for about 10 minutes I put the weight on. I usually use my AA so I don't have the pressure lock.

Do you lock your pressure cooker while you are waiting for the steam? I noticed that when I keep it locked the steam comes out thicker than if I were to leave it partially unlocked.
