First time hunter, found in Mid-Ohio River Valley area in flood plain near box elder and short grasses. Currently waiting on spore print to verify, can anyone confirm with this information?

Technically you're supposed to make separate id request but yeah those are Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata. Nice find

I’ve never found these bad boys but I’m going to go looking tomorrow in a swampy area that floods frequently tomorrow. I will at the very least come back with some needed IDs and prolly a few morels hahah.

Took me 4 years and I still have to travel 50 miles back and forth too my spots to find them. Next trip I'm taking some feed sacks and transplanting ever patch I find. Hopefully I'll get them established next to this stream by my house.

Does bluing on wood with obvious rhizomorphs mean ovoid for sure? Found under knotweed, no fruits but the color caught my eye. This is my second year looking, no luck yet but I’m hoping this season lasts a while, last year was a bad time to get in.

Yes, sometimes it is blue staining mycelium of ovoids, especially if on box elder as it appears to be in your pic, but the wood is pretty far gone.  You cant be certain it is and you can't be certain its not. If it's on another wood species, especially oak or poplar in the east, the chance is less than if BE wood.

Shroomhunts said:
No that bluing is not from psilocybe mycelium. even if you do have a log colonized with myc there is no way to know if it will fruit or not. It can be hard to find new patches but this time of year is great because you can get a clear view of the ground before the plants conpletely take over

I dont think you can legitimately say with certainty that it is or isn't ovoid mycelium.  Not all ovoid mycelium is ropey rhizomorphs; some is a very very small type that permeates the wood and is too small to see easily.

Shroomhunts said:
The blue staining is caused by a different species of fungi most likely Chlorociboria aeruginascens,

Could be.

Shroomhunts said:
A better indicator that the mycelium you are handling is ovoid mycelium is by smelling it.

While the scent is distinct,  it definitely not unique to ovoids and other species that grow in the same areas have similar scented mycelium. Pluteus is one that smells very similar at times.

Re: stained wood. Its curious af how coincidences work out sometimes.
Found today:

Note the pc of wood at the base of the stipe:

The mushroom above fell off of this pc of log:

A fruit that fell off of the other side is below. There were 8 fruit bodies on that single foot long piece of wood with staining in several places, much of it at the bases of stipes or above fruit bodies where the wood easily dries out between rainfalls.

I've seen too many examples of well decomposed, blue stained box elder logs with very cobwebby myc and ovoid fruit bodies present. Definitely too many to agree that anyone can say with certainty whether blue staining on decomposed BE is or isn't ovoid mycelium without further testing.

How does this spot look guys? The photo was taken about a month ago while looking for morels. Most of the trees are ash leafed maple. Still new to ovoids.  Anyone from GA think it would be worth the checkvtoday with the rain?

@relic
I propose a test to settle this once and for all, next time I see some voids groing on a blue log I will test it with reagent for psilocybin. Or maybe I will just eat the wood too see if I trip.
No but really tho you have been doing this longer than I, and I am still learning more every time I go hunting. That is why I love hunting psychedelic mushrooms, It is something that is not well understood by modern science and It gives us the chance to constantly learn.
Mycelium can have similar smells however I have a firm belief ovoid myc has a distinct smell that is unique. I strongly reccomend smelling every mushroom you encounter, god gave you the nose so why not use it

Found some transplanted Susquehanna patches that are fruiting from stem butts introduced a couple years ago along with some nice morels. The ovoids I found during the last week were all pretty small, having aborted to drop their spores because of the freezes. All in all though, not too bad for this time of year.

Georgia’s gearing up for its second flush. Think someone was saying blueing mycelium indicates some production soon. Exciting!

And where’s that Agrocybe hate thread??
