New to cultivating, would like some feedback on my set-up
    #26614158 - 04/20/20 12:46 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all!

So finally got a set of jars which took after getting knocked up (this is round 3). Working with Thai, from a spore syringe and after 2 weeks of being in a heated tub setup (stable at 79.5-80 inside tub) it looks as if at least half the jars are at about 40% (my best guess, I could be wrong) and the least uo to 70%. Since this is the 1st real take I'd love some feedback as to how they are looking. Also any tips for the next steps would very helpful.

I have plenty of pictures, unfortunately can't seem to attach in post.

The tall 1/2 pint are not the most suitable for this method, should be wide mouth 1/2 pint, especially working with bacterial spores.

'incubating' jars at high Temps depriving them of light doesn't benefit the organism at all, it's more stressing than anything.

And tilting jars sideways totally defeats the purpose of using a protective dry verm layer when you're mixing the dry verm layer with hydrated and nutritional BRF mix.

Check out https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086/page/3 Zirans updated Pf Tek guide and keep to newer threads and Tek's. If you read 'fsnning' or 'incubating' then you're reading way too old posts. Gl

You dont state if you are doing brf cakes or grain. A picture is worth a thousand words... here is a link on how to do it:

I agree on all points with Meteah. I just want to add you should ditch the foil on the top op. It will increase the risk of your dry vermiculite layer getting wet and introducing a contamination.also you cakes are probably starting to stall on the bottom because of the size and the heating tub. Just tick them on a shelf and leave them be.

In my experience (which admittedly is limited) those jars may not finish. I have 2 jars on my shelf rn in the exact same position as yours. They've been there for 6 months. The only way to guarantee success with pf tek in those tall jars is to inject enough liquid so you see it running all the way down to the bottom.

My advice is to put those on a shelf and start another project. Hopefully those finish and fruit without issue but if not you've got a backup project in the works.

If they do seem to permanently stall you could maybe try shaking it. All you needis to knock a little myc to the bottom and that should grow out and finish the jar. I'll try that with one mine today and lyk what happens. I was just planning to wait for the season to warm up then dump them outside since I don't use that type of jar anymore

Another solution for stalled jars is to birth them and get rid of what didn't colonise.

Yeah, if you were going to do that I'd maybe think about shredding it into a small tray of coir

So as I said, yes I couldn't get the pics imbedded in my thread and only 3 pics that I could upload to my account so far. I just uploaded 7 more, but still couldn't get them imbedded into this thread, I have tried.
Also Shandra = woman.

Let me clarify, this is the 1st round of knocking up my current jars (which are from Midwest Grow, so I believe they are brf tek and I knocked up for the 1st time on the 6th of April) so I don't see how they can be stalled when they are at up to 70% growth after 14 days.

This is the 3rd time trying any tech since I started back in Dec. The 1st time I did jars and they dried out bc I didn't have the humidity and heat regulation. The 2nd time my grain bags got contaminated. I live in a extremely dry climate where there is rarely any natural humidity or heat, so the dual tub with regulated heat/humidity is working fantastic for me.

What I am actually looking for is to see if there is anything looking wrong with the mycelium growth I have going. I am still new to this so I don't have the experience like some of you. My partner is a combat vet and we both have severe PTSD and brain injuries we are recovering from, so this has been a amazing healing tool for us. We are grateful for the responses. Namaste

They certainly don't look contaminated to me, if growth progresses as normal then you're golden!

I'm just saying mycelium has a tough time colonizing downward on brf for some reason. I've seen it first hand. I really would start a second project just because why not yaknow? A backup plan just in case they stall. The goal should be to grow more than you need because you can just dry and store them indefinitely for when you need more.

Thank you!! I now realize that brf jars are challenging,  unfortunately we had invested before we knew. While many despise popcorn tek, we've had lots of friends do well and recommend it so we set up a group of jars thats is GT and knocked them up last night. We believe they will take and do well, though we do have a local company we can buy some spawn bags if things turn south  (good intentions our jars will be fruitful).

Appreciate the response.

Popcorn is fine, all grains are fine as long as they are well hydrated. I'm sure you've read this a lot already but the other thing you really want to start is agar. It's petty cheap and you can do it in PP5 Tupperware containers (I do) if you don't want to spend money on Petri dishes. It's fun and easy and takes all the guess work out of the whole process.

I haven't tried agar yet, was under the idea that was more advanced than where I am at, though from videos I have seen it looks a hell of a lot easier than using spore syringes. Will give that a look into, thanks.

I tried uploading the picture in thread as you said, when I do so it says that it isn't the right type of file (it's a jpg). Unsure how to proceed beyond adding pictures to my account.

It's very easy and also no risk because it's something you can work on while your other projects are underway.

And just for the record, PF tek is not challenging. The only thing you need to watch out for is if you use a tall jar like that you need to squirt enough liquid so you see it go all the way to the bottom.

You're doing really great so far. Soon you'll have some mushrooms and the best part about that is it means you can start making clones!! (Super easy you just rip open the mushroom and put a tiny little tissue sample on your agar.) If you start playing with agar now, you'll have great sterile technique by the time you can start cloning 👍

If they stall beyond any doubt, a last resort could be to flip the jars upside down and in a downward motion half shake the jar to encourage the cake to hit the dry verm barrier so it becomes unstuck from the bottom. I have saved two half pint jars doing this which then finished colonising and birthed them no problems. I say last resort as it can cause problems, but if you don't have any growth at all its worth a try. Amongst the half pint jars I saved (which are the same as yours) I also saved 1/4 pint jars this way too, even stored them upside down to have them finish colonising. Never had a contam doing this but its possible, on the jars which I just left for a couple months they just dried out. But chuck away that foil it hasn't any benefit being there now. Wish you luck.

Remember to be conservative with your engagement levels in this hobby during shaky periods because this is a double edged sword which can be very meditative or quite the opposite for an individual struggling with stress disorder. Frustration is part of the starting out game, planning ahead and finding good days to work helps

I personally use different methods for different periods to suit my energy levels and to not burn myself out. For three of my ptsd/cptsd friends this has been the miracle medicine, one got over dangerous addiction, one even managed to free himself from life long gang environments, one even started working full time for the first time ever lol. All have their own stories and all have their own medicine not depending on anyone, self sustainable. I even showed them strategies how to make medicine if they're homeless on the street, medicine is priority and acquiring medicine as stress free as possible speeds up the healing process itself :mushroom2::heart:
