too hot and contaminated air
    #26614087 - 04/19/20 11:26 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hello, I'm living on a small tropical island and I'm facing 2 issues. It took me much work and many agar transfers to isolate a good mycelium growth.

1) temperature
the coolest spot in my house has temparatures between 85F and 90F day and night. I know it's not optimal. It works but colonization times are very slow and according to some threads it is definitely due to the high temps. I don't want to run my air-conditioner 24/7 because it cost too much electricity. the only time i run it is during night while i am sleeping but my bedroom upstairs is the hottest spot of the house. it can get beyond 100F. would it make a difference if i move my monos/shoeboxes in my bedroom during night and move them back to my kitchen during day time or or would the drastic change of location and temperatures stress the mycelium too much?
Is there a cheap way to cool down temperatures? I think i read something about using styrofoam a while back but I can't find it anymore.

2) air contamination
Humidity where i live is at around 90% because of all the surrounding water. sounds good at first because i need to worry less about humidity on mycelium but the problem I'm facing is trich which is due to the high humidity if i understand it right humid air can carry more contams. soil in my garden is full of trich and same goes to my neighbors.
I cannot do FAE by fanning. Even fully colonized cakes with 2 weeks consolidation they get trich. I'm looking for teks which don't allow any unfiltered air to get to the mycelium. preferably shoebox tek which is designed to be set and forget but as i understand the shoeboxes already have some air flow built-in. could i design a shoebox like a mini mono dialed in with polyfill stuffed holes? i would wrap saran around the lid to preent the air coming in from there. I'm wondering if the holes should be smaller to prevent the sub from drying out. I saw pasty's mini mono guide but i have many shoeboxes here which are much smaller in size compared to mini mono.

I'm reading a lot through the forums but most people have a different situation. my target now is to lower my temperatures and avoid fanning. Hope i was detailed enough and get some help.
thanks

Do you have parts of of the house/building available that's below ground level, that has concrete floors, or is well ventilated? If you inspect the area you are at you'll always find the coldest and the warmest spots somewhere, also there will be driest and most humid spots as well. Cubes grow naturally often in that kind of temperature range so and contaminated substrates come from grower error and not from tropical temperatures. Many different organisms and their colonies grow faster in warmer Temps and slow down a lil in colder, at least cubes and many bacteria. But some molds will basically start to die if you tried propagating them at 90F. Also temps on the higher end are no problem as long as it doesn't stay extremely high for prolonged periods. I saw a design that cools air, it's basically imagine half a wine bottle from the neck to the waist, waist with the huge opening turned towards windows, openings, and as air currents pass through the bottle from the wider opening out through the narrower neck it compresses the air and cools it down. (may sound counterintuitive considering that compressed air heatsnsmd doesn't cool but I can't remember where I saw this and how they explained the principle, had something to do with the materials as well I think.

Thanks for your reply.
I don't have an part below ground level. Basements are not usual here.
Another thing to add is that i don't have glass windows. it's more like holes in the wall with mosquito nets.actually i have a good air circulation. I know from others in my area having headaches with the trich-rich air around us. what i do during my agar works is taping all windows with trash bags to reduce air circulation. I'm trying to compress as much agar works, transfers to grain, g2g in as few sessions as possible and only during night but it feels like a sauna i sweat the shit out of me. But it works after a lot of trial and error i get consistent clean results without contamination.
I already checked temps of all areas in my house. the kitchen on ground level is the coolest and the bedroom upstairs is the hottest.
I did a lot of mushroom hunting before and i can say that i only found them on the mountain which is much cooler and ideal for cubes and pan cyans. I did not found any at sea level yet. Always need to go up the mountain for mushroom hunting.
To make it clear: my jars whether it is brf cake or grains are clean with nice rhyzomorph growth but the colonization time is slow. a quart is supposed to be @25% colonization by day 5-7 but for me it takes around 2 weeks before i can give them a shake and another 2 weeks to fully colonize. I need to be more patient but i'm just looking for ways to optimize things.
Once i expose them to "fresh air" it takes around a week until they show up some gray/green mold. I really want to try giving them filtered air only and would be thankful for some shoebox sized solutions. The temperature issue is secondary. It just seems to slow down my progress but it doesn't kill the mycelium.
A polyfill stuffed shoebox tek is what i am looking for. I haven't tried the regular set and forget SFF tek yet though. maybe that is already the solution to minimize exposure to open air. I will try different teks once my grains are fully colonized again, as long as they don't require fanning.

Ok i have 8 shoeboxes here and i want to experiment with different teks.

1: SFF by mushboy
2: SFF by shaperdreaming
3: bod's easy AF shoebox with grovery bag
4: mini mono shoebox size
5: frank's dial in like a boss to shoebox
6: small holes at substrate level lined around the shoebox and taped with micropore
7: dubtub?
8:

I need at least 2 more shoebox teks please
again: no fanning policy  :bow2:
thanks
