ID Request: Ovoid/Agrocybe?
#26613399 - 04/19/20 04:55 PM (3 years, 9 months ago) |
|
|

Habitat: Found in the grass near a boxelder 10 feet from a creek. Growing from decaying wood.
Gills: Brownish to pinkish white when young, darker on the older specimen.
Stem: Cream colored. Fairly fragile and slightly hollow feeling.
Cap: Wavy and light brown when young, reddish brown when old, assuming I don't have two species mixed up.
Spore print color: None taken.
Bruising: No color change was observed.
Location: DC/MD/VA area
Comments: At first I thought these might be ovoids. However, the stem seemed too fragile and there was no blue/black bruising. The smell didn't seem right.
I held on to one for 10 minutes wondering if it might eventually blue. When it didn't, I suspected Agrocybe. I used Google Glass and it came back with Agrocybe as well, with Ovoids as a 6th or 7th place guess. I wish I had kept the specimen for a spore print... I could go back...
What do you think?

Not Ovoids, You Can't Mistake The Heavy Blue Bruising On Them. If It Doesn't Blue, It Isn't True.

That's what I thought. When I found ovoids they bruised DARK blue within a minute of picking them and I couldn't easily break the stem with pressure.
But then in the east coast ovoid thread I have a reply from two people in the general region, who I know are extremely experienced, saying ovoids, so...
I guess I will have to get a spore print.

Those definitely have the look of ovoids, maybe they just have no psilocybin, wild genetics can vary alot. They definitely deserve another look but i wouldnt get your hopes up

I Trust The Fellas In The EC Ovoid Thread & I Have Never Hunted Ovoids Myself.
However, I Do Hunt Cubensis, & I'm Very Familiar With The Blue Bruising Of Psilocybes. I See Not Even A Tinge Of Blue Anywhere On Those Mushrooms. Even In The Picture Of The One You Cut Directly In Half.
They Could Be Ovoids, Maybe They Have A Genetically Low Psilocin Content

Pics 1,2 n 3 appear to have a Stropharia sp mixed in, possibly winecaps. The other mushrooms in your pics do look like ovoids, but if they didn't blue and the stem felt off then it may be better to just let them be. There'll be plenty in the coming weeks, so no need to stress over a couple. I've def turned down ones in the past that weren't obviously bluing.

Those sure look like ovoids to me too, ive seen ovoids that dont bruise much at all besides around the cap margin . More pictures of the stems and gills would help

If you look along the rim of the cap were the leave touches the cap it also appears to be bruising blue. But it could just be lighting. I still wouldn't eat those though unless they had very clear bruising

The "older" specimens look like agrocybe or something else the "younger" ones could be ovoids but I wouldn't eat them unless you saw very clear bruising cause I've also found shit that looks like ovoids at first glance but then turned out to not be. Also how did they smell.

Standard Mushroomy. They didn't have that "different" smell that some people describe as animal urine.

I'm in your general area (NoVa) and I too have seen many of these the last few days in perfect ovoid habitat(the berms at bends in rivers, downstream from a known patch). I thought the same thing too, must not be ovoids since the stem is pretty weak and they didn't blue(at least not quickly or significantly), in addition the caps are not the right color- brownish orange rather than the caramel I'm used to. The ovoids I've found in the past have all basically insta blued and the gills have been significantly darker than these.. I was under the impression they were probably agrocybe, I guess I'll go back and get a few pics and make an ID request or post them here, I'm pretty sure they're the same as these.

The strangest feature you are describing is the weak stipes, out of all the voids I have picked, none have ever had brittle stems. It is likely they are something else based on that and the lack of bluing.

Yeah, and in that picture where you see a cross-section I was able to easily split it in half with my fingers by pulling the stem apart. The gills looked pink to the naked eye, not dark brown.
I will go back today for samples and prints because I don't think they're ovoids, or at least not what I'm used to finding, and I would like to know what they are.

I agree that we are finding the same thing. I would like to see your ID request too if you don't mind posting a link when it's up.

Just curious: in my photos there are pins, young, and older mushrooms. Someone speculated the older ones might be wine cap. They were all in the same area and at the time I thought they were the same species when I was looking at them.
Have you seen any older specimens of these? If the ones I saw were a different species I would like to confirm it.
