Anybody here on the autism spectrum? * 2
    #26613129 - 04/19/20 02:37 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

According to my therapist, I am. Despite being OK at being social she says I probably have Asperger's, which would explain my difficulty with making friends (seriously, how do I do that?), and my past difficulty with understanding a lot of social cues (thank goodness for body language books).

Anybody here on the spectrum? What does that mean for you?

That sounds like me tbh. But if everyone who is socially awkward is on the spectrum...is anyone really autistic?

Never been diagnosed with it but I can relate quite a bit to descriptions of Asperger's.

Yea...With aspergers or what ever they call it these days. I think it's all lumped into "autism spectrum disorder" now or something like that.

Psychedelics and MDMA have helped me sort myself out a lot over the years. Along with just growing a bit older/more life experience, more time to "work" on myself. But psychedelics & MDMA have played a big role in helping sort things out, tremendously so !

Most people probably wouldn't even guess I have it unless they saw me when I was younger, I'm able to "mask" & blend in pretty well these days.

I have some sensory issues, more so when I was younger, psychedelics seem to have helped "re-wire" some things over the years....But I have issues with hyper-sensitivity, with sensory processing and filtering, and some auditory processing "disorder"...I seem to experience sensory things much more intensely than most people. I used to wear sunglasses everywhere, even inside stores, because everything was always super bright for me so much so that I could barely open my eyes when I was younger while outside or inside a store (I still have issues with everything being super bright).

I used to spazz out as a kid because a single loose thread or a tag on a t-shirt rubbing against my skin would feel like a razor blade or like a cactus spine stabbing into my skin. I had all sorts of tactile sensitivities as a kid. I could barely walk barefoot because the feeling of walking with out socks/shoes was so intense for me, I would always walk on my tip toes when ever I didn't have socks or shoes on lol . (Now, I walk barefoot almost everywhere when I'm not in public or not walking on ground that is super hot)

I can't filter out sounds, I hear everything and very intensely. Sounds annoy the fuck out of me like no one else, I can't wait to move to a place where I don't have any neighbors or other humans around....But on the other hand, music is incredible and super rich for me .

Looking at someone, giving face/eye contact, is incredibly difficult for me but over the eyars I've got better at using occasional glances/eye contact during conversation...There is so much information coming at me from someones face it's just hard to process and take it all in.

Language is very distracting to my thought process. I don't really think in words or have much of an internal dialog. I often have trouble saying what I want to say, it takes a lot to get my thoughts from the form they are in and into verbal/spoken language in words. (adderall/amphetamines help me tremendously in that area tho, which is one of the reasons I wish I had a script).

As a kid I was practically mute at school...Kids in my classes often didn't even know that I talked lol.

I was a total "space cadet" as a kid lol...I was always in my own dreamy world and didn't talk much, I was constantly day dreaming and/or getting lost in sensory/stimulus and starring at things for long periods of time (like a bike wheel that's spinning).

When younger I was so oblivious to social cues and LOTS of other things, there was so much that I didn't pick up on that came totally natural to most folks...Psychedelics are actually what "woke" me up to everything I was oblivious too.

Being on the spectrum/aspergers has a lot of benefits too though...I consider autism/aspergers to just be a different "operating system" of sorts, just a different way of viewing and processing the world. In my case, I don't actually consider it to be something "bad" and I wouldn't change that aspect of myself at all.

I'm just kinda rambling here (I feel my scatter-brained thoughts/rambles kinda a part of it too lol)...I have more things to say about it, might come back to this thread later.

Autism involves a lot more than just being socially awkward. I wouldn't say everyone that's socially awkward is on the spectrum, but just about every one that is on the spectrum is probably a bit socially awkward lol .

Sensory issues, hyper sensitivity & sensory processing/filtering, is one of the other aspects that folks on the spectrum deal with.

As well as issues with cognition and the executive functions of cognition, depending "where" they are on the spectrum.

Yeah, it's tough to tell if it's a birth thing or a learned thing. A lot of situations in life sorta made me what I am today, including the awkwardness, so I'm not sure how much is autism and how much is just me being me.

I'm not sure if I have an auditory processing disorder, I seem to notice noises a lot more than other people but I can't understand what people say as easily as others do. I've always had ear problems so I just chalked it up to that until relatively recently.

I also had a lot of trouble with eye contact, or just being social in general. I had massive social anxiety. I got into pick up artistry (I think it's called cold approach, since I never did any of that scummy manipulative stuff) because I didn't wanna die a virgin and that helped a lot, but it made me ignore sensible limits for a while, I still think it's better to go overboard than underwhelm but it's been difficult for me to do since I haven't kept doing it.

That used to happen to me too a lot, still does! I used to play games that involved imagining things a lot with other kids, or by myself. I'd stare out the window and daydream all day during school, or just listen to the teacher because it bored me to death to look at them while they taught.

Yeah, one of the benefits of this is supposedly that you're less attatched to people and their opinion on you, which is a major advantage, but not something I've had the pleasure of enjoying until recently, it was the complete opposite when I was younger, where I'd be mortified about what people might have thought about me.

I also love that I can go super deep into subjects I find passionate, the problem being that I'm terrible at self study unless it's something I deeply care about.

I am the SPECTRUM!

Seriously all this autism bullshit seems like rich, bored people's way of making their boring children interesting so they can sell them to everyone.

Ha. I choked on that one.

I am in the field, on the fringe of course. It is one of the most over diagnosed disorders save ADHD. It's easy to call weirdos Autistic, but I think the new diagnostic manual has become to broad around this diagnosis.

That said. Maybe you do, maybe you don't. I don't know you. Still, most skills can be learned - with instruction, practice, etc. Especially if you have mild autism (formerly aspergers). Good for you, learning about body language.

A diagnosis doesn't change much beyond the general understanding it gives to the diagnosed. Still, what about all those children who were diagnosed with bipolar when they truly weren't. Does that have an impact?

I'm all about utility and functioning. Do you work? Are you able to have a couple close relationships? Do you take care of your business? Okay. It is what it is then. Embrace your current character, work on needed skills, take more risks with relationships, etc. Right.

I know you weren't asking for advice, but commonly, I see the diagnosis becoming the person's identity rather than describing a certain (part) of a person's character. Ultimately, diagnoses are just constructs anyway. A person is literally (in many clinics) going through a checklist to see if you meet criteria.

I don't want to minimize your condition if it is causing dysfunction. I am sorry if that is implied here. Not my intention.

We are all learning on a learning curve. Some particular challenges more evident than others. Still, if you are sitting here typing, I suspect you have what it takes to increase your skill in a particular area. Rarely, in the old days, was behavior taught. Social skills in general. It was assumed that your parents did that at home. These days, you wouldn't believe with your own eye, the behavior of individuals coming down the pike.

Anyway, I rant.

Take care of yourself.

Ha. If everyone has it, maybe it's not a condition.

I suspect, at least in my case, that my oddities are derived from a childhood rich with chemicals.

Always thought i was borderline aspergers in high school and middle school except as a kid prior to that, i was extremely extroverted and social..after i hit the awkward puberty stage i became extremely introverted and shy..
I was really quiet and didnt talk to people...but turns out i was just a depressed life noob with a lot of social anxiety and insecurity.

Once i lost the pimples and gained some self-confidence, i was able to reconnect to old extrovert ways.
But maybe slightly in the sense that im good at STEM and have the potential to be very socially awkward...
But for the most part, in my comfy zone, not to toot my own horn or anything but my social intelligence is likely very high....took me awhile to realize this to be the case though

However,
I did read a lot about body language, how to tell if girls liked you, how to pick up girls, etc...
That did help me pick up on a lot of social ques i was previously clueless about so i learned a lot of stuff that probably came naturally to a lot of people..i do feel like i "learned" how to be normal.
My parents say i didnt talk at all until almost 3 but once i did, i had a huge vocabulary. It shocked them they thought i was behind but apparently i was just shy?
Idk. Little things like that make me think i am on the spectrum...but im pretty sure if your on the spectrum,  your introvert by definition.
And while i do have introverted tendencies, and was a total dweeb in high school, my natural happy state is pure extrovert.

I'm actually not bad if I stay away from alcohol.

Sorry if some of my postes are retarded. I'm not actually being serious sometimes.
I just do it because it makes me happy and it makes me laugh.
Suffer with spelling and writing but I can read like a charm.

I think people take things too seriously.
Life is short pretty soon I'll be dead and I dont really care.

Alcohol does a good job at making me destroy my life.
