2 Things really...

1) I've heard grains get you much more of a yield than BRF, and
2) I just tried an experiment with a tupperware style PF cake (worked out very nicely, pinning up behind me as i type)

So... would a microwave be able to sterlize the grains like it does the BFF/verm? :mushroom2:

The microwave is kinda a hit in miss... I personally wouldn't use it. Pressure cooker is WAY more reliable

Pot/lid works just fine, so why waste 20,40,60 or whatever dollars when you dont need to ?

I guess it's a matter of how thorough you want to be.

molds and bacteria live EVERYWHERE. there are probably millions of mold spores floating about your house right now. most molds are quite comfy in 100 degree temperature, which is as hot as a boiling pot of water on the stove can get.

So obviously a pressure cooker is the way to go, and along with the shpongle CD's i'm going to get one when i have money, BUT would a microwave work for sterlizing grains? :mushroom2:

Yes, it could work. But it could fail as well. If I was in your situation a would go for pot/lid method and keeps the heat on for at least an 1hour 15-45minutes. But definetly start saving pennies until you can pick up a PC. Good Luck!

Definitely, the last batch of jars i did for 2 hours and 15 minutes, worked like a charm. I hear walmart has good PC's. :mushroom2:

microwaving works for BRF sometimes but i've heard that you need a PC for grains and birdseeds.

mold spores live at 100 degrees celcius? (however you spell it!)

probably not spores because they have no active means of homeostasis. molds and bacteria, however, do. besides, a boiling pot of water is theoretically 100 degrees celcius, but the jars are probably more like upper nineties, which won't boil off water inside spores anyway.

Buy a used PC. When you quit this hobby, resell it for what you paid.

It's really worth checking thrift stores and garage sales. Friend of mine got a 10qt American PC at Salvation Army for $5.
