Humidification problem
    #2661263 - 05/10/04 10:02 PM (14 years, 14 days ago)

I have 4 cakes currently in a smaller sized Tupperware wear container, I cant get the humidity levels higher then 60 percent. I am using perlite, and it seems to be wet enough, so I don't understand what the problem is.. The walls seem pretty sweaty. I am not sure if maybe its just my hygrometer, it's one of those 12 dollar K mart ones.. Or am I doing something wrong with the perlite..

Its about an inch and a half of perlite, but its not in a puddle of water its just very damp, I used a strainer while adding water too the perlite so It wouldn't be like a perlite pool in there. I even added a cup of warm water after I noticed the humidity wasn't rising.. Hmm?

Go back to Kmart and get yourself an aquarium pump and a long bubble wand to go into the perlite. This will help raise the RH to where you want it to be. It does sound like your hygrometer isnt working well though since you say you have condensation on the walls. This is usually an indicator of humidity being pretty high. Also you can add water to the perlite to about half the depth of the perlite itself. Just add about one tenth or so the amount of water in hydrogen peroxide to help keep it clean. If you use the pump you should make an inline filter using a jar packed full of polyfill. Just run one line from the pump into the lid all the way to the bottom of the jar and pack it full of polyfill, and the line from the jar to the airstone goes in just an inch or so into the top of the jar.

Good Luck
MYKEY

If the walls are "sweaty" then you are probably allright. Most hygrometers bought at places like Kmart suck.
