Basically the title. Not sure if this is a dumb question but can't find the answer anywhere. Idk if it would ruin them

Yeeessshhh, unless you plan to consume/ make tea that day. In that instance fresh is better than dried, i used to throw a big wad in my mouth n chew it like tobacco haha. Always hit a lot faster that way

All these answers are correct. One thing I found though, I didn't like how the dehydrator made the fresh cut fruits look afterwards. Just so deflated and shriveled. So I made hardware cloth trays, and I put mine on a rack overnight in front of a box fan. Then sometime whenever the next day I then goto the dehydrator for only 12 hrs. It makes them retain their shape a lot better imo

Yeah and I bet they have more moister because you did it that way. Why would you care how they look? They look that way because there's no moisture in them !!! I did a ton of experimenting and 160°f for 24h is the way to go.

Nope still cracker dry and takes the same amount of total time but less wear and tear on the cheap nesco motor. The motors don't last very long so it doubles their lifespan.

Rumfor, do you have any comparison pics? Or even just pics of your mushies post-fan+dehydrator treatment?

I don't have any comparison ones seems how I haven't done any straight to dehydrator. But you can see in these current ones it just leaves the stems in a more round shape instead of flattened, light white color instead of
that cooked yellowish tan color. The caps look just a little less shriveled. They just look less cooked being that they got a dry outer layer without heat before being exposed to the heat of the dehydrator. It's not a huge difference but one I feel makes them look better.

I agree full heartedly with this. I once dried an entire harvest just sitting on a counter in a 91f house in dry asf Utah summer. they were cracker dry by day and retained their shape really well.
I just let them sit there. just fyi my swamp cooler didn't work that year (I also no longer live in that house for this reason) and the house retained SO MUCH heat that I had to move all my temp sensitive items into the basement.

Omg dehydrators are cheap as fuck lmao! Who gives a fuck about wear and tear! They're designed to run for long periods of time. I think you're giving bad advice but people are going to do what they want.

I completely agree with mushboy when it comes to using the dehydrator. I even tested everything he said and noticed that they really did get bendy if you didn't crank them out for 24 hours at 160. They seem cracker dry when they actually aren't. I know it doesn't make sense but mushboy was right. I'm with mushboy on drying mushrooms lol.

Meh, to each their own I suppose. Been doing it this way for over a decade. They're perfectly cracker dry, they store vac sealed in jars for long times. No bendy stems, no desiccant, no problems. And my dehydrator motor lasts for a year at least instead of 6 months. Plus the fan racks make for a great staging area while fresh picks wait for a spot in the dehydrators. Definitely helpful when you're rolling through lbs but don't wanna buy a $500 cabela

Hmmmmm. I am with you in spirit, but maybe I just have an amazing dehydrator. 165 degrees F for 6 hours will dehydrate anything. 2 hours dealing with small or thin fruits, 6 hours for the thick meaty ones. Cracker dry. And I don't see that I should keep on for another 18 hours. By weight these have dehyrdated over 90% (it varies obviously but max I have found is 94% water).
I'm gonna quit after 6 hours then and throw them in a sealed mason jar with a food-safe desiccant packet.

Why would you only dry for 6 hours? You spend all of that time growing then you half ass the drying process. Drying your mushrooms for 24 hours doesn't hurt them so there's no reason not to do it!! Ever hear of the phrase better safe than sorry? When newbies read that you only dry for 6 hours some of them are going to follow your advice and it's going to fuck them. Drying for 24 hours on high heat doesn't reduce potency so you might as well do it just to be safe!!!!
Do what you want..
