Diazepam + Iboga + psilocybe cubensis = temporary mild serotonin syndrome
    #26610942 - 04/18/20 04:17 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Hi all

Hope you find yourselves well this evening.

This is probably not a very pleasant read, so don't feel obliged - I'm mostly writing this as an exercise in catharsis. Not really a tale of caution, since most reasonable people would probably have been more careful in the first place. I hadn't had a bad drug experience in a while so i'd become a bit complacent in using strong substances flippantly.

I had had a long week, and had taken flmodafinil on Friday morning to keep me going. That combined with using piracetam throughout the day caused me to be a bit wired when it got to bed time.

Misstep 1): pop 10mg Diazepam. As far as i can recall, this was the first time i had ever tried a benzo. Turns out i'm very sensitive - 10mg knocked me out like a light and i was groggy on Saturday morning and a bit lethargic for the rest of the day. (Think i'll stay away from benzos in general after this experience.)

Misstep 2) to counter the lethargy, i took 500mg iboga root bark at around 12:00. Feel fine, day carries on. I had been planning to trip mushrooms this weekend depending on how I felt, and decided to go ahead. I hadn't tripped with an iboga microdose on the same day before, so i thought it best to stick to a low mushroom dose - 1.5 grams. Took the dose at around 18:00. Come up was appropriately light, and wasn't feeling it too much.

Misstep 3) redose 0.5g after an hour. The trip was kind of dark and introspective - i chalk this up to being cooped up in my room and not being able to wander around because of being in lock down with relatives. All in all this made for a shitty setting and i should've know better than to trip under those circumstances. I think this contributed quite a bit to the mental unpleasantness that followed.

Things started getting weird an hour or two after the redose. Random spikes in heart rate, verging on panic at times then subsiding again. Temperature fluctuations (being hot but feeling cold), pins and needles in my extremities. Gradually increasing tinnitus. Nausea even after i purged. Bad signs all round. Also, my pupils were hugely dilated, almost like MDMA-sized dilation. I never get notable dilation with mushrooms, especially such a small dose.

Things went on to build up to a state of heavy physical agitation which was amplified by the mushroom headspace. It peaked in waves - where i felt fine for a while and thought it was over, only for another wave to hit soon after. The peaks consisted of kaleidoscopic Hieronymus Bosch-esque pornographic images fractaling in on each other when i closed my eyes, accompanied by a constant pressure and hissing in my brain stem which built into a "brain zap" every now and then. All with the classic psychedelic sense of being trapped with no escape. It was psychologically uncomfortable in the extreme.

The redose really dragged the comedown out - the alarming physical sensations died down very gradually. Took about six hours from start to finish. I'm still coming down a bit at around midnight.

What i think happened:
Even though psilocybin is very benign, it's serotonergic action was kicked into overdrive by the iboga. Added to this, i think the iboga interacted with the diazepam that was still in my system (diazepam has a very long half-life apparently) in some way. It was foolhardy to take these two powerful drugs so close to each other. I've read up on serotonin syndrome and i had many of the symptoms of a mild case - at times it felt like things were getting dangerous, but it seems i dodged that bullet.

So yeah. Takeaway is: basically don't be dumb like me and you'll be fine. Everything will remain peachy as long as you don't commit mock psychedelic suicide by giving yourself SS with weird drug combinations.

Stay safe all, enjoy your health and sanity - they're precious.
TE

Thank you for transmuting such a bad experience into a lesson for all of us. Appreciate you for sharing your lessons. Have you tried using Iboga alone? I did a few years ago when I went to a retreat. Fucking opened my eyes. I had sitters and shamans.. Otherwise, I would've gone crazy lol

Honestly that just sounds exactly like every difficult mushroom trip I've ever had. Diazepam doesn't interfere with psychedelics except perhaps to dull the trip, but can cause a rebound anxiety the next day that could've flavored your trip negatively. I would imagine 10mg the night before wouldn't have any effect on a trip though.

Hope you're feeling better

Hey guys, thanks for the messages.

@knowmad - I'm impressed that you've done the full iboga treatment. From what I've read it's like the granddaddy of all trips and can teach you things most other entheogens don't. I've only used it in microdoses. I'd like to try do a full ceremony later this year if things pan out financially after the lock down.

@feevers - I'm feeling a bit better this morning thanks. Head is a bit tender and still have tinnitus but nothing too bad. So glad I don't have to work today. I think you're definitely right about the diazepam. I'm not well versed in benzo pharmacology, but after some reading it seems it's not chemically contraindicated with iboga or psilocybin. As you say I think it mainly contributed some background anxiety from the after effects of Friday night.

I think the main culprit here was the iboga. Even though it was a microdose, ibogaine is a pretty strong SSRI in it's own right and interacts with a bunch of receptor systems - very unpredictable when it comes to drug interactions. That combined with psilocin's affinity for 5-HT receptors probably caused some over excitation in that part of my brain. I mean I'm not an expert in neurology and may be being a bit melodramatic calling it serotonin syndrome (albeit mild), but it was definitely more physically alarming than other bad mushrooms trips I've had in the past. I shudder to think what it would have been like if I'd taken a medium or higher mushroom dose.

Main thing I've learned is to absolutely respect iboga from now on and not combine it with anything stronger than a puff of bud or a mushroom microdose (no more than 100mg).

I guess it might not be all bad if this thread potentially steers someone away from a bad experience down the line. I'm thinking I might give all strong drugs a break for a few weeks, or until lock down ends and everything is more stable (on both personal and environmental levels).

Iboga was super intense... I went on a 7 days / 8 night retreat hosted by a trained Shaman with a full care staff. There were a few of us there attending the retreat. I made a few friends and people were super cool and spiritual. You really got to drop the social masks and deal with people in another more geniune context that really don't exist outside of spiritual retreats like these...

I would implore you to go to a retreat as well if you can. but be warned, that shit is serious. Fucked me up for good but I am grateful for it. Completely set my life on another trajectory after and I am a better person for it. I might do another retreat eventually. It's a health cleanser too, you puke up waste in your body and reset your neurotransmitters. I used to suffer from pretty bad social anxiety disorders.. After the trip, that was drastically healed, something I would've never believed a drug can do after a one time administration... Of course there was a point after my first trip, I was so flushed that I needed help to remember my own name... ahaha so be warned.

From everything I've read a full iboga flood seems to be the closest thing to an actual rebirth you can have. Yeah I'm not taking the idea lightly at all haha. I'm at a point in my life where I think i could really benefit from a strong initiation experience to set me straight for the next few years at least. I wasn't ready last year, and don't know how long the window will stay open. I think I'll try do it in December when there'll be more time to chill and integrate afterwards. If we're both still active on the forum around then I may PM you with a few questions if that's alright. Thanks for relaying your experience, truly appreciated
