Just discovered this awesome combo. The spore cap fits perfectly on a round petri dish. Its too perfect.
Anyone else making hi-purity spore prints on a petri dish?
Updated with some pics:

Just bought some Fisher-Scientific 25mm Deep petri dishes. Hell of a deal too. Very excited to continue petri dish printing journey.

But... That's gonna be a ton of spores to sort through. You are gonna have millions of clamps if your doing this on agar. Haha I love it.

True. I would only do it for "near-future" work like you're going to use the spores in a week or a few weeks. Definitely not the best idea for long-term storage.

Ohh your using empty dishes. Dang you know I was feeling bad about all my plastic waste. I scrape the unused portion of my agar out into my outdoor bed. This is a great idea!

Yup, empty petri dishes not agar dishes. What happened with your plastic waste?
If I printed directly on agar, that would be pretty cool. Im sure its been done before.

I think its a great idea and looks good Logical. Doing it to agar probably looks cool but could lead to germination no?

Well yeah. That would be the point! Skip the tin foil step, go straight to germination. Would be interesting to see how many contaminates appear.

Prints from pins that grow on agar are the ultimate prints as they have been sealed away from contaminates. They are small obviously but you don't need many spores anyways unless bulk making syringes.

Way more expensive than foil. And then you can't store them in an envelope or between book pages

Print on a sterilized glass dish from your kitchen then. The one you're using to make a syringe anyway.

I get it but use tools for their best purpose. Especially when they're plastics that should be used mindfully. Agar is worth the plastic waste. But just as a convenience for syringe making IDK if I would do it. That's like buying full soda cans to use as spacers. They work but they're better off being used as a beverage

I mean if you got tons of dishes laying around that you aren't using for agar then why not.
Otherwise foil certainly seems the economical way to go.

I did this a couple weeks ago in one of my old 60mm glass dishes, for no particular reason, just to be able to gaze upon it's beauty. I've always thought it would make a nice pendant or something.

Thatd be cool. I think they sell glass panes at craft shops. And If I ever needed some spores, just pull it off the wall and use.
But whats nice about the Petri Dish is I can use as art OR making syringes. Versatile, which I like.

While we're sorta on the subject, for some time, I've wanted to "build" a large petri dish with a couple glass panes, like 2'x2', inoculate, then seal the edges with clear silicone. I want to see what mycelium looks like running free for a couple feet. It would make a great coffee table or interior window between 2 rooms like an aquarium.

interesting, foil is so convenient though. I’ve had caps deposit their spores directly into syringes before, but that’s if you don’t mind MS.
That’s the most convenient method imho.

Yeah or you can print on a piece of acrylic and do a clear acrylic pour over it. Like spray it with a workable Fixative so the print stays in place. Then do an acrylic pour over it.

That sounds interesting. So you pulled out the plunger of the syringe and printing into the syringe body?
Acrylic pours would be very cool for spore prints. Great idea Would super-glue work as well?
Im definitely scrapping my spore-printing jar idea. Petri Dishes FTFW.

Basically, yes. Backloading the spores into a syringe was by far the simplest and quickest way for me to quickly make a stock pile of MS syringes that I had/have various uses for. If you do it, although I’m unsure of the necessity of this step but I find it in step with good sterile tek, I do it in a SAB and have cover the fungi cap while it drops, and if super sterile, one can use a cap from a mushroom that’s been in a essentially closed jar since inoculation. But like I said, not sure on this part, but used to do it just in case. Also have done it the quick and dirty way and have never had a problem thus far.
Done right- it’s quick, clean, and effectively skips a few steps. And you can mass produce this way , if you want.
I inoculate a lot of random things in random places....within reason.

Why would you remove the plunger from a sterile syringe? This seems like a bad idea. Like if your looking to get a clean syringe with spores. You would need to really work hard on the sterile tech.
Harvest before the veil breaks. And clean and print in a sterile glass in a SAB, but you would have to remove the veil with a sterile scapel in the SAB.

gotcha, I’ve been staying with family for the lockdown (my stuffs in an apt- different city), but I think I can pull of an approximation of the process with what’s laying around the house. I will try and post them here by tonight.
Also: not disputing anyone’s pointers regarding this, I agree. But it works when done right, and works much of the time for me when done quick and dirty. But those aren’t for my grows, their for playing around and having a bunch of ms. Syringes. Wait for pics

One of the best parts of this is that I can inspect a spore print, top and bottom. Really cool. I can clearly see how the gills from the mushroom cap come off onto the spore print.
