My First Grow Journal * 1
    #26606256 - 04/16/20 05:23 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Have decided to make good use of my stay at home time and pick up a hobby I've long had interest in.

Started a journal of my first build and grow.    Wish me luck! (Also seems the journal posts to community, so I thought I'd cross thread over here in Cultivation)  Hope that's cool..
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26606220

Starting up a grow..

1st time actively cultivating, but lifelong science nerd..that's quarantined in Colorado.  So why not?

I've done a ton of lurking in the boards and FB groups, read up on a million teks and thought I'd give it my own go.

Still early in the build process (photos attached).  Using "The Mushroom Cultivator:A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home" by Stamets and Chilton as a field guide.

I've got a SAB box w/ HEPA + dual fans (plan is to give agar a go...with some bird seed jars from a vendor and sealed while I'm doing transfers)

Planning on working with BODs Agar Tek https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21922023

Also have a temp/humidity controlled fruiting chamber (that I'll still need to dial in) with with a lower water box/fogger for moisture control.  Fruiting chamber has seedling heating pads on the bottom and rear of the chamber with reflective backing.  Trays for spawn + casing mix.  1 big one currently, may looking into 3 down the road.. we'll see.

Plan on doing BODs Bucket Tek https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24077162

Jiffy Mix Casing
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18880716#18880716

Thoughts?  Gotcha's for a rook?

Day 2 Pics..

Still a work in progress, need to do some sterlization and cleaning still.

But thought I'd post some more viewable pics of the setup in the daytime.

Hey, Dude, Hello there. I just started doing this also. Having one hell of a time trying to use this site. How do you post pics ? Tried talking to people but got no replies. Must be doing something wrong. Then had a problem with my password. I'm on a temp password now. Really frustrated with it all.

You have to post pictures to a picture file you have associated with your account you may need to make a new one. Once you upload the picture you get a link and that link becomes the picture in any new post you make. Just copy and paste the link which they give to you immediately after you upload a picture.

Wow, a response,  thanks. Problem is I cant figure how to copy and paste, tried several times. Not used to doing it. This fellow Rivendell is setting up some high end stuff. Not me, just a small bucket grow. Any way, glad you responded. How do you copy and paste ? As I mentioned, and have seen others mention, kinda hard posting on the site. Kool ass hobby especially for those looking for somekind of therapy you cant get from a doctor and get cheap. I've been reading about anxiety and microdosing.

Once you upload the picture to your files it immediately takes you to a page where the images have their respective links. you just click on them and it copies it for you or you just copy it. simple as highlight and control + c to copy then control + v to paste to a post.

Thanks Bud, I'll try it later on. I clicked to add you to an address book and I dont even see an icon for it. Kool site but a little hard to get the hang of. I did start a journal and posted it if you care to read it. I'll work on it more this weekend and try to post some pics. Wish it was as easy for me as Facebook. Peace.

So while I'm getting my agar stuff going, I thought I'd throw some Multispore to Grain and start working on my sterile techniques.

Started off by cleaning everything externally before placing into SAB.  Have a gallon of 91% iso that I've cut down, 500ml iso + 150ml water.  Put the iso into a small bowl for usage (glass blown piece from a class two months ago seemed good as any) and soaked up with folded piece of paper towel to clean.

Placed everything inside SAB and turned on for 10 mins prior to use.

Put on lab coat and nitrile gloves to begin work in the SAB.  Wiped everything down placed into SAB with iso again.  Cut vacuum sealed pre-order bird seed jar and put needle onto 2 test MS needles, Golden Teacher & Pioppino, wiped each needle down, gently shook needle and each jar and shot a couple of drops into each bird seed container to begin colonizing.

Moved Colonized Bird Seed jars into fruiting chamber to spawn and dialed in temp/humidity sensors.

Checked after an hour and the area outside temp was a little cool, so I've wrapped the area up in painters plastic to keep temps warmer in grow area.  This is just going to be a temporary fix as I have a ez-up greenhouse coming in a few days with rollup windows/door.

Will check later today on how the jars are looking after 24 hrs.

Going to get the agar going today and PC it, then pour into petri so I can start isolating genetics, but thought I'd see how this goes in the meantime.

Thoughts?  Improvements?  Advise for a 1st time grower?

By the way.. is there anyway to post short vid clips that meet the size requirements?  I have a few small videos of the misting in the fruiting chamber that I thought was cool and wanted to post.. but don't immediately see how.  Thanks fam!

First off- welcome to the Shroomery!  GT is a good variety to start with.  Never grown Pioppino.  Look forward to seeing what you turn out.  Good you didn't put all your eggs in one basket using all your MS solution on a bunch of grain jars (as spore syringe to grain is always a gamble, although that doen't mean those won't colonize just fine!).  Never seen a SAB with fans and a HEPA.  Moving air in a SAB is the opposite of what you are trying to achieve and instead of scrub-and-evacuate I feel like it's going to be more churn-and-contaminate.  I dunno, but just wanted to offer that up to save you some headache when you  work with agar; which brings me to that.  Bod's agar tek is perfect.  No pours are rad too.  Definately delve into agar ASAP.  You don't need a humidifier for Cubes, but I have no idea what Pioppinos like...  Good to have a setup ready for more complex myco work donw the road though so you'll be ahead of hte curve.  Also (sidenote): love that bowl- nice job.  If I had any sage advice it would be to ditch buying premade jars and such and just read up on how to make your own spawn (crazy simple) and grab some kind of grain and coir and go nuts.  Advice #2 is don't overthinkn it.  Make clean spawn, learn proper field capacity for your sub, and maintain good surface conditions, (much easier than people think once it clicks with you) and grow, grow, grow.  Practice makes pounds.  Thanks for sharing!  Look forward to seeing updates. :highfive1:

Thanks for the feedback!

Just a couple of notes.. These units were bought from a commercial gourmet farmer (oysters, etc) that is cranking these units out.  The SAB is a positive push (will dig up the link later) that pushes air down into the box and out the holes.  Similar to the idea of a flow hood, but in a SAB.

All of the spores are from Sporeworks, so I'm sure they'll all be solid.

As I mentioned at the top, I'm just getting my setup going.. and wanted to get something started right away.  That's why I bought the pre-mades.  I have an All American PC 21.5 that will get showcased soon.

Later today, I'm going to pull together some agar and PC, then do a pour tek in the SAB.  From there, I'll start isolating the cultures.. I have GT, B+, APE, Melmac (also Golden Oysters) and doing transfers.  But I wanted to get something going so I can practice the coir bucket tek/jiffy mix casing techniques.  I have an igloo cooler for that coir sterlization/transfer I'll post pics of when we get there.

Looked around for awhile and found some good recommendations for this setup. Seemed to offer the best of both worlds (SAB/FH) so for a beginner it seemed like a no brainer.

Specs from vendor -

Description

This item will not ship until April 27 due to the coronavirus slow down.

Add ons: 6 watt Uv light

Work 4 times faster than with a glove box!

The TerraFirma flow box is specifically designed for those mycologists that do not want to wear gloves, want to save time or regularly use bulk substrate bags or trays for their mushroom growing. This design gives the user more room, easy access and also allows you to work with out the restriction of gloves.

2 large 5200 RPM fans move air through the HEPA filter into the box and the air is forced out through two hand entry ports ( like a “flow hood” ). This high airflow does not allow air from the outside with algae spores to enter the box while in use.

Under the lid is a large HEPA filter, which stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air, is a designation used to describe filters that are able to trap 99.97 percent of particles that are 0.3 microns. This easy-to-use glove box creates an clean environment for your mushroom cloning, inoculation and spawning tasks. If used correctly greatly reduces the chance of contaminated product. Often used as an inoculation chamber for inoculating sterilized grain, cloning, or adding grain spawn to your grow bags or trays for the home grower. The unit then can then be discreetly stored and moved without hassle.

(Standard configuration) Included in each unit is one fully assembled HEPA Flow box chamber,

(1) Plastic Storage container 24L x 18W x 15 1/4H 80Q 76L

(2) fans

(2) power supplies

(2) ABS rings.

(2) ABS plugs

(1) True 12' x 14' "high flow" True HEPA filter.

Having a real go with the temps, but I think I finally have it figured out.

Over the evening, the heating pads/reflectors didn't seem to do much good.. temp was 69.4 when I woke up this AM and checked

I immediately grabbed a space heater and have the environment stabilized in the low 80s.

Last I checked the temp was at 82.2 (Seems to now be at 82.5)

I like the set up. The only  thing i would suggest (and somebody might have already so sorry if they did) is that I also did a similar set up with the translucent garbage plastic bag walls. Be careful that you dont restrict airflow with the walls put up, not a big deal just watch it when the time comes. Other than that you're golden and will work perfect.

you fell for pretty and shiny things combined with advertising my friend 😃 you will laugh at yourself later like we all did when we over thought and over engineered useless shit just cuz it looked cool and fancy. we all spent $ on crap only to let it end up collecting dust on the garage floor. if your growing cubes all of that shit is gnna be counter productive. it will cause you more problems and take up more of your time fucking with it. i just wish you would have came here and read shit first. we could have saved you a lot of $$. my advice first thing is to take a baseball bat or a shotgun and destroy that horrible thing of a non still air contamination station. as stated that is the complete opposite  of a STILL AIR BOX hence the term still air. its not a positive push particle accelerator & penetration and non sterile contamination imitation combination flow hood thingy ma jig. a flow hood is something totally different and you prolly could have bought one after all that. but all you need for cubes is a plastic tote and the know how that you will get by reading on here. i dont even wanna know how much you got taken for on all that stuff. but im willing to wager everything i have that it was way way more than you needed to spend. just chalk it up to a lesson learned. but a plain ol monotub is all you need to fruit an ungodly amount of mushrooms. now im not sayin all that shit might not be horrible for more exotic species. you wont know til you try. but you will be very shocked to see how un technical cultivation really is when you have the foundation which is clean spawn. we have all been there and wasted time and $ so dont feel bad. and dont take this as an insult in any way shape or form. some ppl are completely butt hurt & cry babies when someone simply tries to tell them the truth based on their own past mistakes. but if you dont destroy that contam box now you will later when you see how it does the opposite of what you want it to do. a pressure cooker and a dehydrator are the only somewhat big investments needed. everything else is cheap to get. i wish you nothing but success man. and maybe one day you can try to fruit some exotics in those which i would like to see. but if you take anything i say seriously plz build an actual still air box. it is essential to obtaining clean spawn. and always remember clean spawn is the most important thing. hell with clean spawn you can fruit in a dirty empty toilet bowl.😃

lol..certainly not going to destroy it!

We'll see how it works out.  If the positive pressure doesn't end up keeping thing sterile, then all I have to do is not turn on the fans.. and voila.  Still A SAB.

Seems to have a lot of good reviews though from a couple of hundred people purchasing and its the 3rd generation of his boxes. Either way, I'm not sweating losing a few bucks over it.  Not exactly breaking the bank.

And I do have an All American PC as well.  Just haven't gotten to that yet.  Hope to do some agar work today and will have to PC it before I pour in the SAB.

These jars are just my very first attempt, while I get the other stuff going.  (Also have a few hundred hours of Tek reading in Shroomery Forums.  If you look to the top I'm using specific teks for my processes)

Hey! you're setup looks visually cool. But I was just wondering, why didnt you just make a flow hood if you could invest all this? Sorry if you already answered this in the thread. Im a noob myself, but it seems like many of the experienced growers that grow things in this forum have simple setups. PC is a must and then the most advanced have a flow hood. Especially with the newer mono and shoebox teks. It feels like keeping it simple still leads to amazing results.

Op I think you got ripped off on the SAB with a dual fan.

Still Air Box- this is the name of it.

You do not want air flow in your chamber that your working on clean cultures on.

I think all that electronic stuff is cool, but everything you have is useless all you need is a plastic box and a pressure cooker for this hobby.

Items required: Pressure Cooker
Plastic tote for a SAB
Shoe boxes  for fruiting
Large Quart JARS FOR grain
Small no pour Petros
Grain
Coir

We'll see I guess.  Like I said this is my first go at it.  Some of the items like the temp/humidity controlled fruiting chamber is so I don't have to constantly go down and mist and can keep a controlled environment.  The SAB is still a SAB without the fans going.  As mentioned, we'll give it a few go's on sterile work and see what happens.  I hear what everyone is saying, but I also have read up on this too.  As for why a SAB vs just going FB.. part of it was that I had not fully read up on the Flow Box designs prior to purchasing my setup.  If it doesn't work out, then I'll replace it.

And this setup is for more than just cubes.. plan on starting a small farmers market level business with gourmet mushies as well.  This is just a side fun project for myself.  Interested in the fruits of course, but part of the fun for me is the locking down of the science of it all.
