Psilocybe Subaeruginosa
    #26611578 - 04/18/20 09:35 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Quick question regarding Psilocybe Subaeruginosa...

In guides for identifying this mushroom, the stipe is usually described as between 0.2-0.4cm thick.

However, I have seen a number of mushrooms identified in this page as Subs with the Stipe clearly much larger in width than described

Any help clearing this up would be much appreciated!!

Not just genetics there are so many factors that can determine the size of a mushroom. Habitat, substrate, moisture, temperature and the list goes on. Size is never a good indicator when identifying mushrooms

not a very good description it should include minimum to maximum stipe width. they can get quite chunky stems especially on woodchips, way more than 0.5cm IME

In my experience grassy subs (wood is covered or buried) have long thin stems but subs growing in naked wood chip alone have much shorter fatter stipes, easily over 1cm in the biggest specimens I’ve found.

They have such a diverse range it probably would be hard to use that as a definitive identification point.

Once you get the hang of looking at them you'll be shocked how big and small they can be as adults
