Freezing for storage * 1
    #26610802 - 04/18/20 03:10 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I've seen a lot of conflicting reports and theories on the effectiveness of freezing fresh mushrooms as an alternative to drying. Here's what my experience has been:

* Storing in a regular freezer in a zip lock bag does not affect potency compared to freshly picked (within perceivable margins). Nothing special needs to be done with the bag.
* The mushrooms can be stored for several weeks. I have not yet attempted long term storage.
* The mushrooms must under no circumstances be removed from the cold unless they will be consumed immediately.
* Thawed mushrooms will oxidate rapidly and turn a dark shade of blue-green within minutes. They'll still be safe to eat, but they'll have lost about half the potency (measured subjectively). Once the oxidation process has started it won't stop even if the mushrooms are refrozen.
* Adding a few fresh mushrooms to a bag doesn't seem to cause thawing.
* Personally I don't mind eating fresh mushrooms. They're not bad but they're not something I'd go out of my way to eat, if it was just food. Eating frozen mushrooms makes me want to swallow as quickly as possible. Eating them with a bit of honey helps with the aftertaste, but you still don't want them hanging around your tongue for longer than necessary. I think it must be the temperature, like how some liquids taste better hot or cold.
* The onset seems to come a bit faster and harder. Last time I started feeling it after 20 minutes, and after 30 minutes the trip was in full swing.

Compared to drying:
+ Easier. Just pick them and chuck them in the freezer, no further intervention required.
+ Doesn't require special equipment.
- Less reliable. Any power loss longer than a few minutes will likely waste half of your stash.
- Can't share fruits with friends unless they trip at your house.

They're your drugs, do what you want with them.

I, personally have found that powdered mushrooms last a long time when stored in an airtight glass container. They store just fine as whole fruits as well.

Just sharing my experience. It's just that I've read a lot of posts talking about how freezing doesn't work because it ruptures the cell walls, from people who clearly haven't tried it themselves. It has limitations for sure, but freezing does work and is a viable alternative in some circumstances.

Personally if I had the option I'd store them powdered, too; you get the most consistent dosages that way. But, this is what I have available.

Freezing mushrooms is definitely a legit way to preserve fresh shrooms. Not sure how long it can last, but I would guess around a month or so, then they will probably degrade.

Drying shrooms has the longest storage potential. But freezing can work, but probably only for about a month. I don't have a lot of experience with freezing but that seems to be the trend for me.

I agree freezing fresh mushrooms is easiest, but it must also be bulky? I’ve started making lemon tea with the fresh flush then pouring that tea into ice cube trays and freezing. You’re talking an hour from harvest to the freezer. The ice cubes, if not constantly thawed and re-frozen, will stay potent beyond a year. Verdict is out on just how long.....

If you have also dried some of your harvest, you will know the water content, so with regards to your ice cubes, you will know the dry equivalent weight of each ice cube. And you also know the]at each ice cube will have a homogenised dose.

That is, once you have had a trip from some ice cubes, you will know the subjective strength of every other ice cube from that harvest.

Just something to consider.

And then when you’re ready to dose, try this:-

60ml White rum
60ml coconut cream or milk
120ml pineapple juice
Blended with mushroom tea ice cubes.

Fresh mushroom tea pina colada

Voila!
