Dehydrator Temperature 1

Most agree that a food dehydrator is the best option for drying mushrooms for long term storage.
And I think most would agree that heat does not degrade the mushrooms while drying; it’s the length of time they are exposed to the air.
So I’m after a general consensus; what temperature do you dry at, and for how long? Do you cut the mushrooms up or any kind of processing before drying?
Thanks in advance, DJ Ed

165 (highest my dehydrator goes) until they are dry as a bone (could be 2 hours for small ones, 6 hours for monsters).

Interesting. I was just thinking about this yesterday. I thought low and slow would be better. Wouldn't the geat degrade the psilocybin? Any benefit then to getting it pretty dry and then packing it in a jar with silica packets?

No way. Are you telling me that my sourcing of a dehydrator which had the lowest heat setting of 35 degrees was based off outdated information?! No longer will I have to wait almost a whole 14hours to get that bone dry goodness.

The highest temp on a dehydrator isn’t going to hurt the psilocybin. Them being in open air will degrade them more (which is also negligible). You can make tea with boiling water just fine which is hotter than a dehydrator will get. Anyone that tells you to dehydrate on a lower/slower setting is silly.

My thinner ones usually can finish up in 12 hours but I like to leave in longer. I read a thread from mushboy that they can get cracker dry in less time but when placed in a bag they will soften over time. I usually tape a silica packet in the bag but even that idk if it will keep them perfect. I’ll link the thread. Also run dehydrator as high as it goes won’t mess with potency air and moisture break them down thus degrading potency. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23782274/fpart/all/vc/1

To be fair its just what I read, and in fact at the time of reading I did find some other sources claiming psilocybin has a very high heat resistance. So I just went with caution. I'll be sure to crank that dehydrator up high from here on out though.

Thanks mate, I plan on powdering them soon but I have kept all the desiccant I come across for keeping the dry, dry.

This is a hotly debated topic. Not only between drying mediums but even among those who use these common, household food dehydrators. There doesn't seem to be an answer. For me, I dried two batches, in the process of doing my second actually, and my first time I did it for 24 hours. I am an hour into said drying, so I will check the shrooms in a few hours in case 24 hours is too much. But I really wish we could get something remotely resembling a consensus on this.
My dehydrator has only one setting, and while I couldn't find my exact model on Google, the ones that look exactly like mine (Same frame, colors of trays, color of bottom, and even on/off button placement) all seem to have a temperatures in the 170's.

There is a consensus, it's just that some people somehow still don't know about it. And so, this topic still comes up daily. It's kinda amazing.

Side note... investing in a good dehydrator was one of the best things I did. I’ve never had to run more than 6 hours (and those were for giant monsters, not cut up). Normal sized stuff is cracker dry in 3 hours.

Yea a -rear fan/rear heat- dehy is the best investment you can make. I use 2 of the Aroma Nutriware [kinda like an excaliber] from Amazon only like $140 each

If your shrooms are even fairly large, I would just do a 24 hour dry cycle @ 160F to be sure
I have done 12 hours before and a week or two later they are turning limp in the bag. If you ensure they dry fully first time around this won't happen. Also store with desiccant packs if you can, that is a game changer if you live in a humid area and need to store fruits for more than a few months

Also, if you don't wanna store them, you can give them out for free to all your friends stuck in lockdown

Mine usually dries everything within 18 hrs at 70C. Highest setting is 80C only the real monsters need a bit longer sometimes. Keep the dried shrooms in ikea ziplick bags with a few desiccant packs thrown in and they keep cracker dry for a long time. We also keep them out of any light but I'm unsure if that is even necessary

Okay, then just to dot my i's and cross my t's, what is that consensus? I am very new at this, and in the middle of my first grow. So, electric dehydrator best or one of the best? Drying temp, say in the 170's F, good, optimum? And most importantly, because I think I know the answer to the first two questions, what is the time for drying in one of these food dehydrators?
I have read 24 hours, I have read 4 hours, and pretty much everything in between.
Oh, and if there really is a consensus, is there some kind of empirical data? Or is all or most of this anecdotal evidence? Not trying to be an ass, but I honestly don't know the answer, and having read so many varied, opinions, many of them contradictory to one another, I would like to know what the truth is, and what the basis of determining that this, indeed, really is the truth.
