When to g2g

Hey everyone. I have one jar that survived my first batch and I would like to grain to grain it with some other jars. It is about 98% colonized. Do I g2g as soon as it is visually 100% or should I give it another week to be safe? Thanks for the help.

Yes, wait till appears perfect then wait another couple days. Use the time to make a SAB.

you dont have to wait additional time after it is at 100% visually. As long as it breaks apart easily, its good to g2g... you might want to wait a few days before spawning it to bulk, but some don't even do that.

I respectfully disagree. You can't be sure the entire jar is colonized by looking only at the mycelium pressed against the glass. Seems smart to wait a few more days to reduce risk associated with ruining a grow because the grain isn't ready.

Mycelium grows spherically, out from a central point, like the big bang. If you see it everywhere against the jar/bag, it has to be everywhere else.

mycelium can be hard to see so if your jar looks 💯 than it is more than 100%.

It is more important that your jar is 100 percent colonised before spawning to bulk than it is before g2g. Uncolonised grain can cause trich in your tubs when spawning to bulk. But for g2g, you would just be mixing uncolonised, sterilised grain onto more uncolonised, sterilised grain. Eventually, the uncolonised grain will be colonised. I wouldn't recommend using jars at 50% but if they are 80-90%, you shouldn't have an issue. In a perfect world, one would wait for 100%, but when you need to speed things up, it's not worth waiting for.

I agree... but its true that until the jar is at 100% you can't really be sure that its clean - especially if the jar stalled...

That's a very good point. If a jar is stalled, better to not use it; especially for g2g. Last thing you want to do is make 1 bad jar into 10. I like to do many steps that lead me to g2g and this helps me prevent bad spawn. In the event that bad spawn occurs, my method prevents it from spreading too far. I clone tissue to agar, then agar to agar, then agar to grain, then grain to grain from mother jars, then spawn to bulk. Seems like a lot of steps but once it is all set into motion, it runs like clockwork.
