Maybe I'm in the wrong threads, but apart from the zZZz stuff an "excessive peace and love" vibe is not really what I get here. Sure a lot of people try to keep things positive and upbeat, but I think that's just called being a well-adjusted human. I'm hoping to get there some day
I've never once felt the need to "self-censor" here. I've been called out on stuff Ive posted numerous times, sometimes warranted and sometimes not, that's just part of conversation in any group. If you really want your safe space then find somewhere that everyone thinks the same way you do.

Yeah, that's what I liked about the shroomery community at first. You can say what you want for the most part in most places, but you will get shat on or banned if you just troll or flame.
But also it's a community of very open minded people that have seen many different things in their lives.
Most people that have an interest in shrooms are likely to be more open minded, but the shroomery won't let you just talk out of your ass for no reason.
We're a community of dreamers that try to keep ourselves grounded enough to not fall off the earth.
Edited 3 times to make it eligible.

That's society as a whole though, it's not a cause of shroomery.

One of reddit's biggest problems is many of the subforums are overmoderated or undermoderated.
This is largely a problem with admins and elected moderators but I also have no doubt alot of mods just get burned out.
Going from a member, someone who enjoys the subject and conversing the community, to having to keep the community under control, isn't easy for most people. The one type of person that finds it easy and prefers it already have an authority complex and that's not good either.
The shroomery not only has the best longevity of ANY online forum I know of outside of reddit and 4chan but it also usually picks pretty decent moderators.
Ythan and the admins have done an incredible job with this place. And I've seen innumerable positive changes since I've been here.
Though those of you that know me know I don't always agree with these changes and have no problem calling them out... the long view is that the community and the staff have done alot of work to make this a better place and I appreciate all of you for it

That right there is where you say it. A place where you could make a racist joke without people coming after you for it. That sounds safe for racists, but not safe for people who don't like racism. Personally I prefer an unsafe space, where you can make a racist joke and anyone who wishes can tell you what a piece of shit you are for such a shitty sense of humor. I can see that being a much less welcoming place for racists, but I also don't want to suggest that any of the old members who are no longer with us are racists. I have been reading through old threads in my quest to learn as much as possible and one thing I see a lot of is disagreement, mostly about methods of growing mushrooms, but also about politics and philosophy of many sorts. I certainly see people get butthurt over those disagreements, but more than that I see people learning from them. I haven't seen any less disagreement recently, nor, for that matter, have I seen any less racism, mostly anti-semitism.
Omg really? I even put “joke” in bold. If you don’t think racism can be funny, tell that to Dave Chappelle.
Again, the question was why older people don’t stick around.

Definitely start by banning all the really shitty old members who suck like 1234go. What a loser that guy is! Just banning him alone should improve moral significantly and raise overall post quality.
I'm also in favor of causing all the old members to relapse hard on their various drug addictions, and we should provide free drugs, especially lots of free LSD.
I'm kidding, it's just a joke. Funny thread, I approve.

I didn't say racism couldn't be funny. I said your idea of a safe space is weird. I guess I understand a little better if it has to be a joke, but that kinda forces everyone to be passive aggressive, which seems way more toxic than being open.

How is it my idea of a safe space? The thread is about poasters who are old and make quality poasts. I don’t fit any of the criteria.

1234go said: I feel like most of the better old members don't really come around anymore. Of course this doesn't apply to all of the old members that are still present, but a large portion of the better old members have simply vanished.
So how do we attract the higher quality old members?
The only thing I can think of is for the staff to send out a mass message via PM to everyone of the Shroomery as a sort of morale boost. Statistically some of them are likely to be the better, higher quality old members. But the problem is that we're likely to get many more low quality old members as well by doing so.
The other thing I was thinking is: how is the experience of being an old member is different today than it was maybe 10 years ago? I feel like maybe something has changed with the experience of being an old member. Maybe they feel out of place, or unnoticed? Underappreciated perhaps? I don't know...
Anyway, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the subject.
I came in around 2005 in a different account. 2005-2010 was peak pill epidemic. I think a lot of us who joined the forum during that period of time got strung out, sober, or died.
I just came back today because I forgot about the shroomery and this lockdown is boring as hell. I got sober and have been for 6.5 years, so I didn't have much of a reason to come back on.

The last reason could be theres not enough traffic. Perhaps they need more "action" if you will.
What happened to Coaster?

I moved from the NE gathering people area to the PNW. I stopped logging on after some weird shit happened with a member from a long time ago. I guess I stopped logging on because of that. Anyways that was a while ago and I lurk a lot now.

We did somehow attract Kirilan back, but then she disappeared again: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26432539#26432539
I think the main reason is people age and their personalities change over time. Thats what happened to Crystal_G, CandyGirl and Coaster. Time changes people, to the point that they no longer want to post on the Shroomery. Kinda sad
