It’s back...
    #26610291 - 04/18/20 11:49 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Can anyone tell me what this contam is I had issues with this same thing about a year ago and accidentally opened a jar of it in my old apartment hindering all efforts to grow the rest of the time I was there. Now alittle smarter I won’t open the jars inside, but I’m wondering should I toss the jars I just moved into my new place and I fear that even if I open outside at a different location and dump there the jars would still bring the spores back and ruin my attempts here too? What do you think toss the jars and sfds or bring back with lids on and pc instantly empty?

Looks like trich (green mold).

Definitely toss the grain and scrub the jar really good. Trich is likely the #1 most common mold infection.

Isn't that just a regular green mold?

So you think I should keep jars and everything? I’m literally horrified to bring the jars back into my house after last time.

Well, I don't like to waste things, so I would recommend cleaning the jar outside and washing it out really well. But if you MUST throw it away, go for it.

Just trying to avoid wasting glass and money.

I always take contaminated jars/tubs outside, dump the contents into my shit-pile, then i bring the tub/jar inside, wash/scrub it with bleach and then reuse it. (i put jars and lids into the dishwasher)

Is it really true that if you open a moldy jar inside, you won't be able to produce clean spawn in the future? I always doubted that... whats yalls opinion?

Thanks for the good read btw!!! Ok I’ll take somewhere else hose it out and soak in a bleach solution. What about the sfd should I keep that too?

No. There's plenty of green molds that aren't trichoderma. Trichoderma specifically is way worse for our hobby than the rest of them, since it's parasitic and basically integrates with your myc. It can also stay hidden for way longer while other green molds will often sporulate relatively quickly.

Don't throw that jar away. Your contamination issues are coming from your technique. There's millions of spores in your apartment already.

I was a fool... inoculating jars in open air with no SHIP. I have learned from my mistakes, plus I dumped all 10 sporulating jars into my trash can in my old house I did it to myself!

Just inoculate them in SAB next time. Don't go for SHIPs, they don't work that well.

I'd recommend you to inoculate them with agar next time tho! It's fun and gives you better results.

Actually, wouldn't he be better served boiling the entire jar for about an hour before even opening it, just to kill all the contaminants, and then cleaning it out?

Agar is definitely a good route. Yeah, don't open-air inoculate. Bad practice! Always inocc in a SAB or flowhood.

Yeah, boiling is a good idea. Or getting a bucket filled with water and opening the jar underwater so the spores don't go everywhere.

Just got 500 Petris waiting on a media bottle and parafilm then I shall be ready to try agar once again! I like the boiling/underwater ideas, but won’t the water ruin the sfds? Can you clean sfds?

With grain still inside? How long to kill the mold?

As long as you want at this point. No less than sterilizing for use. Then you can toss it and clean the jar.

Why would pressure sterilization not be good for sterilization?

It just seems like putting a moldy jar in your PC feels like a bad idea to me. With all do respect my friend.

It seems like there are less TCs commenting these days than from 10 years ago. At that point one or more would have already commented to do it. It’s the only reason I suggest it having seen it posted repeatedly back when.

PC is for sterilization. Mold spores will actually die way before you hit the boiling temperature. Bacteria is why we need so high temperature/pressure to make it all clean.

I'm gonna say it's safe here aswell. If the tempt is correct it will kill everything in the jar. I've done it before with no issue, just seems like a waste of time. Dump and scrub.

It’s usually half measures, laziness, and corner-cutting that produce the issue to begin with.

Indeed. Don't cut corners with mycology. Lots of infections will follow.
