You'll often find there is no one correct answer in this hobby for many things. People mostly give you their experience and until you try things out yourself you wont find definitive answers to your questions. I believe the general consensus of the mush drying temps is higher temperatures do not damage potency and obviously dries them quicker so whether you invest in a dehydrator or just use desiccant is really just up to what you want to do.

I have a food-dehydrator, and I use desiccants, but what I was alluding to above mostly, is that there doesn’t seem to be any agreement on time. Even in this thread, we have people asserting times like four hours only, some saying they dry for 24 hours in the dehydrator, and drying times in between the two. I’m just trying to get a grasp on what is recommended, because as I said originally, there does not seem to be any sort of consensus on the drying time.

I understand, well again in my experience, sometimes I've had decent sized mushrooms bone dry under 12 hours, but only to rehydrate to some degree at some point thereafter which is probably why people recommend a full 24 hours to ensure absolutely no moisture inside them at all. Beyond that, as each mushies water content differs its probably hard to give an exact timing.

Not everyone is using same dehydrators, same size mushrooms, same RH, same time logging etc etc
After you dry a few lbs of mushrooms youll start to know how long theyll need

The consensus is to use a dehydrator, as hot as possible and for as long as it takes to get them as dry as possible. How dry and how long are variables you'll have to work out for yourself, asthey are highly personal, eg your climate, how large/thick the fruits, how full the dehydrator, the type/brand of dehydrator, etc.
The ultimate is to periodically weigh your thickest/biggest fruit until it no longer loses weight. Do I bother with that? No. I run my Excalibur for 24 hours, unless I'm drying monsters, I'll let it go for 36. Where did I get this emperical data? Same place I got the rest. From standing on the shoulders of giants. You cannot over-dry them. You do not want to under-dry them. The compromise is yours to find.

Ok ladies and gents,
Thank you very much for your considered replies. I thought I knew what the answers would be before I checked, but asked anyway to be sure.
The reason being, I’ve grown mushrooms for years, and had great success with multi-spore grows (lucky?). I dried them with a fan, hanging in racks for 5 to 7 days, before moving to a large desiccant chamber for a few more days. This would never bring the RH down below 10%. I would then store in bags or tubs in the freezer, with desiccant sachets in the tubs.
I have stocks still of some of these that are over 5 years old and are still potent.
Then before Christmas I bought myself a food dehydrator. Don’t get me wrong it is the most convenient mushroom equipment I’ve ever bought. I have dried a few batches at 70 deg C in under 4 hours then stored, as per usual, in bags and tubs with desiccant in the freezer.
My last harvests, from golden teacher and then Mazatapec, have been really weak.
So feeling better about my dehydrator; sounds like I’ve had two unlucky multi spore grows.
More spore sysringes coming this week, and some agar work ahead then.....
Mush love DJ Ed

Good suggestions for dehydrators? Mine went out on me and since we're on the topic, what KIND of dehydrators do you all have? I have a nesco and it sucks. I have recently purchased a presto dehydrator and hopefully it works better.

160 here, my dehydrator uses forced air circulation. Dehydrator designs vary, the inexpensive bottom coil ones can take much longer, then say, my forced air, circulation dehydrators. I know some that go 24 hours, but I can load mine down, ( about 1/2 lb dried after), done in 7. Cracker dry. Now, I'm in a very dry climate, if I took my dehydrator to Florida,it could take 10 hours, because the dehydrator is pulling in very humid air. Dry until cracker dry, let sitfor a day, ziplock etc, be certain still cracker dry before sealing, or going into storage. Time doesn't matter ( in hours)cracker dry does. (Unless it's taking 24+ hours to dry, certainly don't to be drying for a week);

I found an Excalibur for cheap on Craigslist locally, and I'll never go back to shitty dehydrators. So much better and faster...
Knowing what I know now after using one, I'd probably buy one new if I needed one. Basically can dehydrate stuff in 3 hours that would take 12 hours in my old shitty dehydrator.

160°F for 24 hours. I don't care if you have 3 mushrooms on the trays or 200. Just Run them for that time period and don't think about it. Trust me you'll run that thing for 12 or 15 hours thinking that they're completely dry but they're actually not. 160 FOR 24 HOURS!!!! Get a vacuum sealer and some desiccant packs put then in the freezer and those fuckers will last for a REALLY REALLY long time!!
