Bruising or contamination
    #26609808 - 04/18/20 08:04 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

5 days ago I put my cakes in a 18 hr dunk and over the past few days of misting, I've noticed this off color. Contamination or bruising?

Not too sure if it just me but I cannot enlarge your picture to take a closer look.

I checked your Gallery: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/usergallery.php?gallery=491570

Looks like bruising. Also looks like you made some grain cakes?

They're WBS cakes, is that an issue? This is my first time.

Im pretty sure you need to case your cakes with coir or vermiculite/coir mix in a jar.

Im unfamiliar with the Tek. Got a link?

Certainly looks like bruising to me also. Never heard of grain cakes to be honest, they should definitely be cased though. Kk, out of interest what made you try WBS instead of brf cakes?

More info on Casing. Any grain should be cased: https://www.shroomery.org/13871/Casing

I had easier access to wbs and was misinformed on the life span of syringes so rushed to make them. I uploaded more photos to my gallery to try to determine contamination or bruising better. Can you still case them in vermiculite once the mushrooms started forming? Also does anyone have a good link for making spore prints so I can try the next batch differently?

No doubt, it happens. Yeah, you can case at any time and should ASAP. Its definitely bruising which means you need to keep your FC more moist.

Is there a ratio of verm to coir for the casing? How do u case them once they're already fruiting?

Case around the fruits.

1:2 is a common ratio. Its 1 part coir, to 2 parts coir. Or 1:1 is good too, but for mixed substrate: https://www.shroomery.org/54/50-50-Casing-Tek#5050plus

The link isn't working. So basically mix and saitize the mixture, and add a small layer to the entire cakes ?

And 1 part coir to 2 parts verm or vice versa?

Yeah, mix verm or verm/coir or coir then sterilize (bake for verm, steam for Coir), then add to your cakes, avoid burying your fruits.

At the very least, put some sterilized, wet verm on top of the cakes and around the bottom near the fruits.

1 part coir to 1 part verm. The 2 parts is the grains, so 1 part coir to 2 parts grain spawn.

So you can make Casing with:

Vermiculite
Coir
Verm with Coir mixed at 1:1 ratio.

Thank you so much. I'm going to to steam a verm and coir mix and add it when it cools. Should I add to the sides along with top and bottom?
