Did drying destroy my mushrooms?
    #26607740 - 04/17/20 10:06 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I dried 22.5 wet grams in an oven on low setting with a fan blowing. I did this on two separate days for a couple hours. The mushrooms were on an oven tray and I did notice the tray was too hot to touch, but the air inside the oven was slightly hot and the fan was blowing. So that's the context they were dried in as I lack any other means.
Today I consumed first 1.22g dried and later the rest of 2.07g dried that they all came together. So these mushrooms were at least 92%water.
I consumed them in tea made from grinding the mushrooms in a coffee grinder. My initial dose was actually 1.2g dried in tea. I had drank the tea of that and didn't notice any different feeling in 20mins so I decided to also consume the mushroom material.
An hour later I consumed the rest 0.8g dried chopped up in liquid, but I feel not much different compared to previous. So the overall effect of all these doses has been a mildly intoxicated effect (some very faint pattern type visuals behind closed eye lids) and limbs feeling energized. I have also drank 1 large beer during this.

Conclusion: The reason I think something happened is that 3 grams WET was approximately the same effect, but shorter, and actually even more intense at times. Yeah. This would mean less than 0.3g dried of the same mushrooms.

Anyways, feel quite good at the moment and on the verge of tripping.

I would guess the spread out mild doses is more a problem than drying.

Next week, try 3g all at once, drink the tea, and swallow the chunks. Post back results. :mushroom2:

How long ago did you take them?

Are you able to take another 2g now? LoL :crazy2:

So it's 2000 and I took the rest at 1800 I think. Feels like the effects are diminishing. There was definitely some euphoria and still is. I am still certain that the drying significantly effected the strength of the shrooms because compared to 0.3g which I could clearly feel, the experience of 1.2g+0.8 after an hour doesn't feel like that much difference. Well, I am all out of mushrooms now, but once my mono is fruiting in a week or so, I shall go again :hereyougo:

Lol, there ya go, that’s the spirit!

Most technical problems can be solved as simply as ABC, Always Be Cultivating. That way, even if there are problems like potency or technical issues, that’s ok, no problem, no sweat, because, theres moar shroomz on the wayyyyyyy!!! :mushroom2:

Which reminds me, I need to cook up some agar this weekend...

LOL so true. Yeah I would have probably dosed more at some point if I had any. Still feeling good atm after a couple of beers too, doesn't feel like a disappointing experience at all. I am laughing at a lot by myself and just having a good time.

One thing is weird. I have like zero appetite. Just cooking some hot dogs now, but last time I ate a meal was 6 hours ago. Almost feels like on some stimulant too. And usually alcohol makes me want to eat something afterwards.

I've wondered about the effects of drying as well. I use a dehydrator, but I wonder if leaving it in the dehydrator too long has negative effects. I'm not concerned about the heat so much as the air exposure.

What if grinding the mushrooms to a fine powder exposed them to enough air to degrade them before they were put in boiling water? I have no idea how sensitive psilocin or psilocybin is to air, but from what I learned from one thread was that psilocin is rapidly destroyed in drying, so some potency loss is inevitable.

Grinding alone shouldn't be enough to degrade them that much. I know that I'm not the only one that has had good experience with powdering the mushroom. I've even seen people recommend drying them, powdering them, and filling a container to the brim with the powder to minimize the amount of air in the container.

Maybe if you grounded them up and left them sitting exposed to air for a long time?

its not the dehydrator nor the heat. the potency loss from both is practically nothing - making tea from shrooms is almost no potency loss, and you lose far, far less potency dehydrating shrooms than you do from improper dehydration, resulting in moldy shrooms and degradation.

it was definitely due to spacing out your dose and from the fairly low dose to begin with - tolerance builds up quickly and goes down slowly. drinking alcohol probably didn't help either, especially with that low dose - id imagine that probably competed with and overpowered the trip effects.

In my experience, oven drying is the worst way to dry shrooms. It just doesnt work like it should.

Use a dehydrator or drying lamp set up instead. Should fix your issue.

Yeah I plan on getting a dehydrator. Any particular kind I should be looking at, high heat /low heat? Also today I was thinking about ways to preserve fresh mushrooms: tea into icecubes, or just plain fresh freezed. Have to look into the best methods. Canning came to my mind as well, but they might taste nasty with the saltiness.

When we were younger we just put them on paper with a desk fan blowing for about 24 hours. Then we put them in the oven, lowest setting with the fan on and the door open. Stored them in the freezer in case of any moisture left. There are definitely better ways to do it but they were stored for 7-8 months without problems

Do wish that I had a food dehydrator though :Awemush:

Any dehydrator for at-home food dehydrating works. They typically dehydrator looks like This Model

Food dehydrators don't get super-hot, so they are safe for using for drying mushrooms. Also A note: Don't use a shroom dehydrator to dry food. It will smell of mushrooms on the food u dehydrate. Unless u don't mind the taste/smell

I agree. Personally I wouldn't even want to risk using an oven.

I just fan dried mine for like 2-3 days (and there was quite a bit too) and it worked like a charm each time I had to do it this way. And then I stored them in mason jars and these mushrooms stayed potent even beyond a year down the road (they would've stayed potent even longer but I ended up eating them all  )

Yeah fan drying aint bad, especially if you dry air in your house and use a low/med fan speed. Ever tried to dry shrooms with an electric fan heater?

No sir the only method I ever used was fan drying. I'd put them in a box over some paper towels and just keep the fan going for like 3 days straight.

Interesting technique. Just saw a thread about a guy "pre-drying" his shrooms on racks in his arid house, just on wire racks (no fan), then placing them into a dehydrator. He said they retained their shape better that way

Sometimes i just put my shrooms open air to dry in my room if the weather outside is dry as well. Works pretty well.
