Just in grass or possible sod in a small dog walk park.

Panaeolus Papilionaceus Is Most Commonly Found In Dung. I'd Say They Are Another Panaeolus Sp.

I've found papilionaceus in grass many times. I do not know of any other panaeoli that resembles the papilionaceus. Which one do you suggest?

I Wasn't Going To Suggest Any, There Are Too Many Pan. Sp That Are Only Distinguishable With Microscopy.
I Was Unaware That Pan. Papilionaceus Grew In Grass, I Always Thought That There Was Dung Sunken Down Into The Earth & It Just Couldn't Be Seen. Making Them Appear To Be Growing In Straight Grass. I've Never Found Them Growing Outside Of A Horse/Cow Pasture, Unless There Was Manure Present In The Substrate.
However, I Believe You When You Say You've Found Them In Straight Grass. Also Paps Are Known For The Partial Veil Fragments Around The Cap Margin, So I Agree They Are Panaeolus Papilionaceus.

Didn't say straight grass 😀 Always manured. Since sphrinctinus, campanulatus, retirugis and papilionaceus were found to be the same species, I don't know of any real look alikes. Not saying there aren't any, just don't know them and I think they'd be rare.

Ah, Agreed. OP Says They Were Found In A Small Dog Walk Park. Dog Dung Is Not Suitable For Panaeolus Papilionaceus. So Maybe There Was Cows/Horses There At One Point In Time? Lots Of Possibilities There.

No chance there were cows or horses here. Its dead center in a tight housing development that has been here for 20+ years. Its only about 25 square meters
