"Two lights provides a total of 10,850 lumens."

Definitely not worth buying in my opinion.I've got 11,200 lumens with my two fluorescent light fixtures side by side for my seedlings.

As far away from the lights as the plants would be would give you much less than 10,850 lumens unless the top of the plants were within 6 inches or less of the lights.

You also probably wouldnt be satisfied with the growth rate of the plants.

Yeah that definitely wont grow tomatoes. For tomatoes they should be grown under MH or sunlight in the vegetative stage and HPS to give the proper red spectrum for proper formation of the fruits during the fruiting/flowering stage.Around 50,000 lumens is ideal.

11,000 lumens (like from 2 48" fluorescent fixtures)is ideal for herbs or shade loving plants or plants that like partial shade. While you can grow many plants under that lighting growth is much slower and needs to be very close and is ideal only for vegetative type plants like herbs or plants which you dont require to fruit or flower at all.Its not sufficient for flowering/fruiting at all.THe flowers and fruits if they form at all under such lighting would likely be malformed/poorly formed and/or small.

i see. interesting. would an HPS light work for both plants cycles?

No.HPS light is heavily in the red spectrum which is only good for flowering and fruiting really.MH light is heavily in the blue spectrum which is only good for vegatative growth really.A good investment would be a switchable grow light system that allows you to alternate between HPS bulbs and MH bulbs by flipping a switch and changing bulbs. That sort of system would yield impressive growth as well especially with 1000 watt systems. It would allow you a large growing area and would rival sunlight easily.

http://www.specialty-lights.com/4570.html

389 dollars plus shipping and bulbs. But nothing is better than this and nothing less than this will really work properly for what you want.(Although you could go with a 400 watt switchable system but it gives you alot less growing area and slower growth than the 1000 watt system

Most place the 1000 watt switchable systems run 350 to 450 depending on brand and website and the 400 watt systems run 300 to 400 on average. For the little bit more it costs its far worth getting the 1000 watt system.

Growing area for the 400 watt system is 16 to 36 square feet and the growing area for the 1000 watt system is 36 to 100 square feet.

Remember, when doing something the right way, there are no shortcuts.

holy shit man, i'm look for like 2-6 tomato plants, not 36+ square feet! jesus. i'm not a vegan. does that make more sense for the lower wattage?

lmao Yeah. The grow rates will still be QUITE nice with the 400 watt system.I do believe they put out right around 50,000 lumens.

I on the other hand am almost a vegan.Im actually a raw foodist and about the only animal or animal by product I consume is honey. So not quite vegan. But definitely a raw vegetarian technically.

first of all the algae would run rampant in that clear reservior,
the heat from that lil 50 watt hps wouldn't be worth the light it gives off, and that 500watt floruex is a 125 watt flourescent light.

Now, YES you can grow with only a HPS light, in fact I recommend it if you can only afford one HID light.
See, the light from a heat 1000 watt Metal halide, though in the blue spectrum, has much less useable light for the plant than say a 250 watt HPS.

If your neurotic about adding blue spectrum light, a couple of cheap flouro's in the room will do wonders, without adding too much heat into the grow area. If your grow room gets over 85 degrees f, the spider mites will find your grow and devour it.
you can find a nice ( new) basic 400watt HPS online for around $100-125. Bulbs can be had at the local Home Depot or Lowe's hardware stores.

HPS have a much weaker blue spectrum than MH while HPS do give off slightly more lumens it has a weak output in the blue spectrum compared to MH.MH gives about 125 lumens per watt and hps gives 140 lumens per watt approx.Plants will do alot better with switchable system with MH for vegetative and hps for flowering fruiting than just an HPS even though one might be able to get away with using just hps.

Young plants under hps tend to grow thinner and tall which I personally dislike. The plants tend to stretch.Plants under MH ten to be shorter and bushier. The stretching is due to the lack of blue spectrum.

right on. thanks for the info. so what wattage MH and HPS should i get in my switchable grow cab? again, it will only be large enough for about 4 tomato plants.

400 watts is plenty good for that.

trust me MH's are best for rooting clones or keeping a Mother plant in veg.( Though I like a lil stretching, so it's easier to take healthy clones) Your plants won't stretch much, unless you have the light too far away and you are trying to grow Sativas indoors.
Also, heat promotes stretching.
Keep those temps down....especially the temp "Difference" at the Day/night switch... cool days, even temps day/night,...and smaller temp "Diff" between night and day periods will induce tighter internodal ( Bud) Spacing....Thus no stretching
And Grow an Indica Pheno!..Sativas are notoriously tall and lanky, and they don't work well in grow boxes.

I also recommend A Mediumless DWC rig if you're gonna go hydro/ scrog.
It's just hydro without the grow rocks, net pots, and other expensive bullshit. Much cheaper to build and run than traditional setups and works better that standard DWC The lil collars hold the plants when they are lil, and the scrog screen will eventually support the weight of the plants as they get bigger.

check out this grow box www.suncell.ca It features electronic flouresent lights which cycle at a much higher rate, much better for growing plants. It produces very tight nodes. If you are really interested watch this: http://www.pot-tv.net/archive/archive.cgi?q=sun+cell+growbox

Flouros are Much slower at growing your plants.
HIDs are the ticket.
And I'd be leery of anything comming from Marc Emery.
He threatened to give up the names and addys of his US seed customers to the feds when the customers complained of shitty genetics.
He's all about the dollar.

they should juat have a 150w in there, i never heard of anyone using a 50w. 70w is the lowest hps ive seen used. this is such ahalf assed system, that res is so small your have to top it off every day and the roots would get all bound up. Build one yourself using that cabinet they bought from lowes or wherever and just put a container at the bottom with netpots and a light at the top with a fan.

Marc Emery has nothing to do with the sun cell growbox. There is simply a show on pot-tv about it because it is such a revolutionary growbox.

yeah i'm gonna build my own box. i'm thinkin 150w HPS and MH for both plant cycles, on some sort of switch. 7 or 9" fan at the top blowing air out through a carbon filter with a couple 2" air intakes at the bottom. this will be big enough for 4 tomato plants, meaning at LEAST 30" inches high with 28" x 28" base dimensions. the walls will be either painted white or lined with foil panels. i'm not sure about the hydro set up. i'm gonna need help setting that up. thanks for all the help so far
