grain dissolving in the jar
    #26609620 - 04/18/20 05:17 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

hey everyone,
so I started making my first own substrate jars with wheat grain, that I'm colonizing with chunks of my old, store bought substrate. It is working beautifully, however in some places the grain seems to be disintegrating into little crumbs. it's not slimy though. Can anyone tell my why this might be or if I should be worried? (There are also yellowy orange secretions, which I assume are metabolites, all around the jar)
I'll try to attach a picture

It doesn't look good. There are probably bacteria, maybe yeast or something. The mycelium strands also don't look good, they look a bit like anaerobic pin-mold that i once had.

All pin molds are obligate aerobes

It was growing in a brf jar, there were gas exchange holes. Anaerobic isn't the right term.. i used it because it didn't start sporulating until i birthed the cake.

Probably, you could still try to spawn it with a small chance of a few fruits... but i would advise against it. Maybe i would try growing it out outside.

Describe your procedure and i will try to help you out

ok so I sterilized the jars with the grain in a normal boiling pot for a few hours ( don't have a pressure cooker) and then inserted a piece of my old substrate into the grain before closing the lid. The sterilization has seemed to work pretty good as there is no sign of mold or anything at the bottom of the jars, where I would expect it most as it is the most damp. the jars have been steadily colonizing from the piece of substrate downwards over the course of two weeks. I will probably leave them for another week or so until trying to fruit them separately.

Okey, did you ever hear anyone say: "just follow the tek" ? I really mean no offense, but they say that, so things like this dont happen.

Firstly, you can not sterilize grain in boiling water... you simply need a pressure cooker.

Secondly, and more importantly, you can not knock up grain with "old substrate". Old substrate was already exposed to an un-sterile environment, so it is un-sterile. And the procedure of "inserting piece of old substrate before closing the lid"... thats not how that works.

Thats not how any of this works.

I would suggest taking a look here: https://www.shroomery.org/13864/General-Cultivation

Good luck in your future grows
