Fedex is my absolute last choice for any kind of shipping. Hate them, they have killed so many of my live order with their unreliable overnight shipping not to mention their prices.

FedEx is a private company and can ask you whatever it wants.
FedEx is a private company and is under no obligation to deliver your package if it doesn't like your answer.

I only use United States Postal Service for customer orders. More protection and generally better service.
Local pickup isn't an option yet. Hopefully you drop FedEx and UPS. UPS is at the bottom of the list and burn through drivers every few months, mis-deliver mail, etc.

Better hope the USPS survives the next few months, then.

It will. The rate hike is for Amazon and the mega corps that use it for the "last mile" and if the USPS really needs a loan, then it will hike the rates.

Maybe they're asking because your shipping label probably got fucked it can't get scanned or delivered without that. So they would be in a much better position to help you if you told them what the fuck to look for. Or the box got destroyed and still they need to know what to look for.
Fuck man... It's pretty simple

Normally it's to determine value in case it is lost.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that stealing is against the law.

There’s a great new episode from John Oliver (HBO) about the USPS and why they are losing money.. Check it out!

FYI, there are legitimate reasons for asking about the package contents. Items come out of their packages with no corresponding tracking info all the time for all kinds of reasons. Odd-shaped items can also cause logistics issues that may help identify a delay.
If you don't feel comfortable sharing the contents, just say you don't know or aren't sure.
