Box Elder and Apple Log Cultivation
    #26609034 - 04/17/20 08:17 PM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I have several Box Elder and Apple logs cut and stacked in my backyard.  They range in diameter from 6 to 14 inches and are all about 4 feet long (relatively easily handled).

Anyone have recommendations for edible strains to grow from these types of logs?

Thanks!

I'm sure others will disagree, but the folks at Ashville Fungi say "NO black locust, apple, cedar, or Osage Orange". Boxelder is also a quick rotting species - I'd expect light yields if it does work.

Granted, oysters will grow on almost anything, so I'd def give them a try if you're committed to using these logs. They were cut relatively recently, no? Within the last 6 weeks or so?

I've found Hericium growing on still living crab apple, never saw any other edibles growing apple logs  or trees besides the Hericium.

The logs were cut just before the freeze last winter.  As you've suggested, these logs may not be worth the effort and expense to attempt inoculation and growing.  Think I'll find some oak.  Appreciate the response.
