Casing look ok? (PICS)
    #2660059 - 05/10/04 03:42 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I just did my first casing today with some wheat berries. I used 50/50 verm and sphagnum (peat) moss with about 10% crushed oyster shells by volume.

Firstly, the oyster shells weren't crushed very finely and I'm wondering if they'll have any effect at all when they're this course:

Secondly, does this grain look colonized enough? I thought it looked ok, but it was very crumbly in the ziplock and I wasn't sure if it had dried out or something (sorry for the bluriness):

Lastly, my casing was at field capacity before I microwaved it and I went ahead and cased with it. After I was done, I squeezed the leftover to test it and it had dried out below field capacity. So should I mist it lightly or will the high humidity (95%) in the fruiting chamber be sufficient?

Thanks for the help all...my fingers are crossed.

I mist mine with a 5% peroxide in water

Is that before or after adding water to the casing layer to begin with? I guess if I've come this far, I might as well spring for a spray bottle.

What about the substrate? Does it look ok to you?

Substrate looks fine...use peroxide mixture when you are preparing the casing

Whoops, too late for that. It's been mentioned many times that once the substrate is completely colonized, it's pretty resistant to contamination until it's been through a few flushes. Any comments on this? How often do your casings contam before fruiting?

The grain looks pretty good. Having a little bet less water is better then having way too much. Like was stated above just misting the casing well with a h2o2 / h2o mixture will be great.
