The fallout from Patriot Act was felt even over here, with airport security for example. I doubt this is anything like that.
It's an app that collects GPS co-ordinates, big deal, I have a couple of apps I use for work that do exactly that now. Google does it every day if you allow it to access your location.
Anyone ever delete an app before? You can still do it

From what kushie's been plotting, it looks like the government is basically going to create a "national security" loophole in HIPPA, and require that all medical records get submitted to the government for tracking.
Technically, they can already use "national security" to look at patient records, but it takes place on a case by case basis and requires a judge to sign off. They're just going to remove the requirement for a judge to sign off and make all medical records open to the government upon request as part of a national database of health records.
This may not apply to Aus, but you guys have had the Liberals running the show for longer than I'd care for.

People sell their personal lives for a coupon code, you will get no push back. I want a clean bill of health tracking app, brought to you by your favorite government contractor.

Lol true, me too... not much we can do about it at the moment though.
I think our conservative god-bothering Prime Minister is doing a reasonable job.
Quote:
Should I be worried about the privacy implications?
Always. But there isn’t as yet enough detail about how it would work in Australia to know what the implications are. Morrison said he was pushing for greater privacy protections than the Singapore model.
“The reason we are not quite ready yet is we are still working through ensuring that it meets the privacy protections, which are robust and up to a standard that we believe is necessary for the Australian context, and that is what the attorney general is working on right now,” he said.
Privacy experts have warned the app needs to be more decentralised, so that the central servers that store the IDs do not become honeypots for potential hackers.
Government services minister Stuart Robert said the app was going through a privacy impact assessment with the help of the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
When pressed for more detail, his office declined to comment.

Then don't vote for republicans. Who was it that passed the PATRIOT Act?
Im all for the maximum amount of rights and autonomy. But do you really think that if the Democrats had held office during 9/11 that the Patriot act wouldn't have been passed?
Yes

Yes.
Of course, it's all speculation, and speculation has a way of becoming rationalization.

Well, considering that the vast majority of Democrats voted "yes", im sure it would have passed anyway

One thing that has stood out is Trump being unable to understand this from a level that isn't focused on himself.
This stand off with with state governors... There is almost zero political nuance to his approach, other than not wanting himself to look bad. His low ball political point scoring is cringe worthy and disappointing to watch.
To be fair, the U.S. was always going to be hit hard, same as Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy but Trump has not been able to come up to speed with the leadership and strategy required.
Endorsing the people protesting the lock downs... if that doesn't illustrate his level of pathetic navel gazing self absorbtion nothing will.

Just because Trump is a moron doesn't mean he shouldn't call out the WHO
Yeah he should take some responsibility for some of the mistakes he made, but you and I both know that won't happen, so why even bother?
WHO on the other hand, yeah I think they should be held accountable. They are likely responsible for a lot of peoples deaths.

You should be more worried that a governing body such as the who are politicizing a health organization and lying to people. They should be held accountable. The who gave the world inaccurate information and played favorites with china. The who should be impartial and work for the betterment of the world, and not puppet for ANY country... politicians are career liars, but they should absolutely call spades, spades.

Everyone in politics is likely politicizing it to some degree and I'm pretty sure they all lie about things.
I agree corruption should be punished but the system is fucked and true justice will never happen.
Maybe you've seen things I haven't but I thought WHO was trying to raise the alarm a long time ago (Dec?)

Nah. For weeks/months the who downplayed and dismissed the possibility of human to human spreading, blocked Taiwan from the who and ignored their findings( they nipped the virus the quickest of any country and credited not listening to who advice ), advised agianst China travel bans, urged countries to keep their borders open and advised people to not wear face masks unless they were sick. I probably missed a bunch of points but the who definitely wasn't raising the alarm bells in December. They actually waited until mar 11 the raise the alarm

I agree, and I don't think it will be voluntary. I just hope the invasion of privacy doesn't go beyond what we are dealing with right now. I personally will accept a little invasion of privacy (but I'm carrying a work letter certifying that I'm essential, LOL). Others will strongly disagree which is understandable.

I think the Democrats would have passed something similar. I don't think they would have abused it as bad, but to what extent is an open question.
We were torturing people just to torture them, and it wasn't getting us any closer to Bin Laden. We also raped a lot of prisoners in Abu Ghraib including children, cause that's how you fight a terror war. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_torture_and_prisoner_abuse
