Please help ID...
    #2660808 - 05/10/04 08:35 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I just noticed these in the yard a few days ago... I am pretty sure at this point that they are not active, but my curiousity still remains as to what species this is... I have searched for hours on numourus mycology web-sites with no luck.

I am in Central North Carolina. Hopefully the pictures will help... but the small one's cap is about the size of a quarter, while the bigger ones are about the size of a silver-dollar, with the stems about 1.5-2 inches long. The stem is hollow, the gills are not attached... and it smells like a normal mushroom would I guess.. I don't have a spore print, but I'm working on it... anyway thanks for your input.

The pics are fairly large in dimension so i hosted them off-site.

Thanks again

DO NOT...I REPEATE DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS 100%
I am pretty much totally new to shrooming but those do look like a picture of an active mushroom that i found on a website...but there are obviously tons of look-a-likes and i dont know much about mushrooms at all...but i am just saying that they resemble something i have seen that was active. Did it bruise blue?
peace

first of all, nothing active.

personaly my guess would be Stropharia kauffmanii... which if it is to my knowledge its unknown edibility...

Another guess would be Pholiota malicola but it doesnt have the same type of stem as of Stopharia kauffmanii...

still either way not active and of unknown edibility...

DO NOT EAT!

Yay for Mitchnast.

I also will go with Psathyrella velutina. That's another of those species that we'll see a lot out there for the next few months.

Happy mushrooming!
