Casing cubes question
    #26607989 - 04/17/20 11:53 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Forgive me if this is a silly question but I spawned a monotub yday,, I mixed my colonized mycelium with cvg and put a layer of leftover cvg on top to cover exposed grains. When it’s fully colonized could I add my casing (peat/verm/limestone)? Or should I leave it alone and let it fruit like it is?

Leave it, next time try casing it. Note your results. Casing is and will likely be a debate for some time. I never see much difference but i still do both hoping to see a pattern.

The cvg you put on top is a casing.  If you put it in fruiting conditions now, it may not fully colonize the casing.  If you let it colonize for a week or so before fruiting consitions, it will likely be fully colized by fruiting.  I think you will only see benefits from peat casing in very high fae fruiting Chambers like sgfc's, and almost no difference in a mini.  I think the main benefit of casing coir substrates for cubes is that you don't have exposed grains potentially getting dry on the surface, or exposed grains getting pulled out during harvest if you twist and pull harvest.

The cvg is not a casing layer. I agree with Smartattack in that there's not much of a difference between casing and uncased in the case of Psilocybe cubensis when it comes to yield. The one thing I will say is that adding a casing layer gives a buffer for moisture content in that it ensures high humidity which encourages pin formation. If you have a problem maintaining humidity, then casing can help. Otherwise, it's probably just a potential source of contamination so many growers here are better off without it. Some species definitely prefer a casing layer, though.

Ok cool thanks y’all. I’ve recently started fruiting Galindoi atl7 so I have a bucket of pasteurized peat based casing. For cubes I’ve always used cvg as a “casing”. I put this one straight into fruiting. Again, thank you!!

Yeah I'm gonna go with smart here too.

Cubes don't need a casing layer.

Sounds like a toplayer to me unless you use a peat casing after knots start forming. Which will work for not cubes.

I leave exposed grains in my tubs all the time. I'm not saying it's a good thing to do, but it's what I do.

Lot of people have opinions. I choose to listen to select few

Here's a compilation of TCs talking about casings on cubes: largely CV.

Tl;Dr: casing are helpful and not harmful

I know one guy who's been growing a lot for years, he switched to case and fruit at spawn months ago and hasn't looked back. Sometimes people have no reason why they do what they do except thats the way they've been doing it in the past. Buddy probably woulda kept on doing no casing if I hadn't have sent him bin after bin of better pinsets that he was getting.

100% top layer of coir at spawn can make a huge difference.

I only bother with real casing for PE.

It's my impression that only PE wants casing and it's because they grow so slowly the casing layer is required to maintain surface moisture necessary for knots then pins. For all other cubes substrate + spawn should be at least 3" deep in uncased tubs to maintain moisture levels. Apply casing AFTER the substrate is fully colonized, wait till casing shows 20% mycelium then place in fruiting. Jiffy organic seed starter is wonderful casing. Pasturize it first.
